But also still loved by many. It's a controversial subject but the insane amount of bitterness displayed by some on the left who weren't even alive during her reign is way out of proportion.

Oh, I very strongly dislike her - but I'm still not a member of that 'Street Party When Thatcher Dies' group.

I probably should like her, actually. I think it was when I heard about that Channel 4 "comedy" on Margaret Thatcher that portrayed her as a very elderly geriatric who had a desperate lust for Tony Blair or something else like that which is when I knew that elements of the left were consumed by their own hatred.

I was in a froth all night! I was literally frothing! I swear cruel and bloody vengeance upon those who would besmirch an English based film with their vile Americanisms! But seriously, it takes a lot more...no, wait that's not right. It takes something other than this to make the English angry, we are an angry people. We just don't make a lot of films.

She destroyed industry in huge chunks of the country where 'her people' didn't live. I think if any young people hate her it's likely that she made their parents redundant. If you think it's irrational you need to do more research. Notice that the Liberal Democrats are now unelectable in Scotland because they're in a coalition in England with Thatcher's party thirty years later. Feelings that deep don't happen for no reason. Pinochet is still loved by many, y'know.

It's called acting for a reason and all that matters is how good you are at this, not what's on your birth certificate.

The impact of her time in government had a profound consequences on the lives of people and those subsequent generations who have grown up in the 1990's and beyond are still being effected by those policies and decisions made during the 18 years of conservative dominated government.

A lot of our industries, skills and knowledge base in manufacturing has suffered and here we are facing a crisis were our economy has become dependent on the industry concentrated in the south east of England that benefited the most from that era. We now recognise that we have boxed ourselves into a corner economically as we have leaned too much onto financial services and lost skills and trades that have now been exported to the 3rd world or emerging economies.

Many communities in various towns and cities throughout the UK, mostly outside of the South Eastern England zone have suffered quite badly with the consequence of entire industries and jobs disappearing overnight. Theres a huge chunk of Sheffield even now which is mostly comprised of empty steel works and warehouses that's like a dead zone to the city. The one sole steel mill left, Forgemasters, only employs 300 people. These cities such as Sheffield used to be the wealth generators of the country and now they are empty shells of their former selfs with the odd americain style shopping mall implanted here and there to make up for it.

Memories are short. I remember Micheal Portillo made some lovely remarks about single parents and their children in the 80's. Gotta love that guys career turn around, a border line facist to a rather "nice guy" television and radio presenter you'd almost forget he came out with some tremoundously vile statements in the past. What people remember of the 18 years of that Tory government is utter contempt shown to those in poverty who were not winners of the new service economy it isn't something people forget easily and you do people a great disservice by trivialising such events.

I agree with the ewok and the mouse.

Margaret Thatcher made this country more selfish, more materialistic, more intolerant, and less compassionate.

I get where you're coming from Tequila, but I remember what it was like to live under her 'rule' (an appropriate word).
She doesn't deserve the 'love' of the people of this country. But you're right that people on the left are sometimes consumed with bitterness over her. We need to move on, without forgetting.

If she plays the part using an American accent it will just make the film seem ridiculous and unwatchable.

Sorry, I forgot about the original question. From what I've seen of it I think Meryl Streep will play the part very well, with an appropriate accent.

Sometimes it makes more sense for Americans playing foreigners to just keep their native accents. Tom Cruise played a real-life German in Valkyrie, and he didn't even attempt a German accent because it would have sounded ridiculous and distracted from the story. You can argue about authenticity all you want, but I think we're all aware that we're watching a dramatization, not a documentary.

On a somewhat related note, I'm frequently annoyed by the way that foreign actors are so often expected to fake an American accent in American movies. Is it really so implausible that a British character would be living in America? It especially annoys me when the actor is no good at doing accents. Sam Worthington, for example, is just miserable at doing American accents. Is there any reason his characters in Avatar and Terminator Salvation couldn't have been Australian? They might as well have been, since his accent kept slipping out constantly.
