i like animals that trust me that visit me from the bushland. they are wild and they have never met humans and they are not bred to be compatible with me.

when i earn the trust of a brush tailed possum who never interacted with a human before, i value it as a validation that i am real and lovable by nature.

people and their designer pets all expect things other than simple truth, and i just love bushland animals who never interacted with humans who love me.

people say that the little grey birds (australian miners) that i love are just rats with wings. i have 2 problems with that. firstly ..what is wrong with rats, and how do they extrapolate their disdain for rats to such sweet little birds. to humans they are not pretty and they do not sing a sweet song, but the fact they love and trust me is as huge as anything that can ever fill my heart.

whatever i am now saying easily contestable things because i am almost asleep, so i will come back maybe tomorrow. i must admit though, that i will not post things forever. but i will tomorrow.

I think people's problems with rats are twofold. - I like that word -

1) They have a history of getting into food stores and eating it and contaminating it with poop, therefore stealing our food. All animals will do that, but rats can chew through things easily, and are more common than other animals who have that ability. Being animals, we are protective of our own food, and in historical times food was much harder to come by than it is now, so if a rat got into your food storage you could literally starve to death over the winter.

2) The plague. Although it wasn't rats themselves that carried the plague, it was the fleas on them, the rats got the blame for it and are now seen as disease carrying vermin. All animals carry disease. I believe bunnies carry leptospirosa. I may be wrong, but I know they carry something. Our immune systems take care of that though.

I had always hated rats but then I met a girl who had a pet one. He sat on her shoulder and she took him everywhere. He was the coolest thing ever! He didn't even bite. The white mice we get for our snake are cute too and I have no problem handeling them. We have even thought about raising some for him because he's now up to two mice a week. But I'm afraid that would get out of hand fast.

Oddly enough, when we have mice in the house, the little brown ones, I can't stand that! They do not look like the cute white mice at all, even though they are the same thing except another color. They freak me out and I put traps out everywhere and gross me out completely. Maybe I'm a mouse racist, I only dislike the brown ones. ;-)

I like rats and have rats and mice.

I like squirrels and miss my squirrels from my old house since I moved. It's probably for the best though since I think right before we moved my landlord became aware of the squirrel hole above my back door and I really didn't want to be there to see him get my "upstairs neighbors" evicted. There were so many of them and we fed them a loaf of bread every day. At times there would be as many as 8 or 9 large fat squirrels on the porch waiting for their bread. Every year a female would have a couple of litters in the hole above our back door.

Here is a cute picture of the mother and one of her babies.

I would like to get a cat but I'm worried that it would bother or scare my rats.

You can buy or make squirrel feeders to go on trees. My in laws have a lot of them. Some people make them from wood or others use goards.

That way they stay in the yard and up high and away from the cat if you decide to get one.

If I got a cat it would be an indoor cat. I live on a main road and there are loads of strays around here. They like to hang out in my yard. I haven't seen too many squirrels in my yard in the new place. I tried to go out in the yard and make friends with the stray cats a few times but they all run away.

Cats. Or rather, one cat at a time.

Hanyo, your strays may be feral or semi feral and probably wouldn't make good pets.

I love cats and dogs.

Dogs are playful, loyal, protective and energetic. Cats are cute, cuddly, affectionate and also loyal.

My favourite pets are rabbits because they are so much more interesting than people believe. I also like other small animals including guinea pigs, hamsters, mice, degus, spiny mice and gerbils. At work we have ferrets and rats as well but although I like working with them I wouldn't want them in my house because they stink! Rats do make very good pets though, they are very clever and affectionate. When I move I might be getting a partner for my bunny Ralph and possibly one of the various small animals I have mentioned above :)

Definitely cats, despite them being kind of annoying at times. My favorite cats are Maine Coons, they're positively the best cats ever. They're almost "doglike" in all the good ways.
