I'm an only child due to China's one-child policy.

I have a brother 10 years older than me. He's very social, has a great sense of humour and everyone likes him. We don't talk much but we're close. :)

Great responses, everyone. Seems like so far there aren't a lot of big families, lots of only children, and families with 2.4 kids.

Off-topic, but DarkDoorsShut: is that a Glacius avatar? If it is, that's pretty cool.

I have 3 siblings, two older sisters and a younger brother. Our ages:

Oldest sister: 32
Older sister: 31
Me: 21
Younger brother: 17

My mom often says that she feels likes she raised 2 different sets of kids, first my sisters and then my brother and me. We also grew up in very different environments, with my older sisters having been raised in California surrounded by extended family and my brother and I having lived in Idaho our entire lives.

My oldest sister is very kind, gentle and patient, though she was not always this way and feels remorseful for the way she used to behave when she was younger. She and I both long to be close to one another, but it's very hard because she lives in another country (England).

My older sister is extroverted, selfish and manipulative. She never feels like she does anything wrong and never apologizes for her actions, although she hurts people's feelings all the time, both intentionally and unintentionally. We all suspect that she has some type of personality disorder or other mental illness, but she refuses to get treatment. She wants to be close to me but I won't let her because I don't trust her after the way she treated me in the past.

My younger brother is stylish, sarcastic (in a humorous way) and very mature for his age. He and I had a turbulent relationship during our childhood, as is common among similar-aged siblings, but we've grown very close over the years. He is the person who I'm closest to besides my mom. Although we playfully tease and banter with each other, he is always there to offer a kind word when I'm feeling down. It makes me sad to think that, in about a year or so, he will leave home to pursue his own life goals (which includes joining the military).

I'm an only child & I think that's probably a good thing because I had lots of problems & it would of been a lot harder on my parents if I had siblings they would of had to care for. I think it's best for me as well because siblings tend to fight a lot & I had a very hard time getting along with others as a kid especially other kids.

I feel bad for you. It's hard enough for me having 3 siblings. I would absolutely lose my mind if I had as many siblings as you do.

When I am 32 that will be pretty close to the same age difference with me and my siblings, except that I am the oldest

Maybe there is a link to that and autism 8O

Well, I know that children born to older mothers have a higher risk of being on the autistic spectrum, and my mom was in her mid-30s when she had me. My younger brother also displays a few autistic traits, such as rocking back and forth and having special interests, and he was born when my mom was even older.

I have 2 full siblings. My brother is 8 years older and my sister is 18months younger. I talk to my brother and probably never will to my sister again. I have had 11 step siblings in the past and 2 currently. I know of 5 half siblings but there are probably lots more. (my father likes playing the feild and never stays with women long)

So, what is your own experience in growing up as either an only child or with brothers/sisters?

Well, here's one that blows the concept out of the water I think:

I WAS an only child (I'm not anymore ~ a child that is :P ). That contributed to two things:

1. My oddities were usually attributed to be an only child.
2. Though not as much was known about Autism then, I still think being an only child interfered with people recognizing that something really was different about me, other than simply being an only child.

I'm Fifty one years old now, with three kids on the spectrum. Absolutely sure now that being an only child didn't have anything to do with being Autistic. Most of the odd way I looked at the world I used to think stemmed from not having siblings. Now I have three kids who see the world very much like I did, so there goes that theory.
