I'm literally surprised that motel was still in business, every time I drive past it only the sign is lit.

As far as the gang shootings; don't live in apartments that have other apartments surrounding them and you won't be bothered with murderdeathkill

Really though, pound-for-pound, Anaheim is a much safer city than Irvine

I went to school and grew up in West Los Angeles, and still go there often (once/twice a week usually) for one reason or another. Now I live on a farm near the small town of Somis in Ventura County; about 60 miles northwest of LA.

Los Angeles has it's good points, including fair weather 350 days/year, but the overpopulation and crowds, crime, political atmosphere, and radical taxes are all negatives for LA that keep me from ever wanting to live or work there. We lived in a nice neighborhood near UCLA, and despite the better-class residents in our area, the crime (both petty and serious), was too much. If we didn't wait for the trash truck on Wednesday morning, there would be a thief coming along right behind it to steal our trash cans, and we could never leave a note out for anyone because burglars would take that as an invitation to break in, etc. Any time I'd go anywhere, there was a line waiting or a crowd of some sort. Not what I like to be stuck with!

Now I'm within a 90-minute drive from anything in LA that I want to go to, and I never need to lock the house, and we leave car keys in the ignition (or on the dashboard in cars that buzz when the key is in the ignition and engine off). We leave checks and cash pinned on the front door for deliveries, and we needn't worry about any of that. I can go out naked if I want to (I don't but could), and walk all around and nobody would ever be around. Nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile away.

CA taxes are still a big problem, so we have a small house in Dallas, which costs money to maintain with property tax, gardener, water & utilities, but it's still a fraction of the cost of paying taxes to CA for income earned on Texas investments. If CA could get it straight about attracting business back here again, they'd stop being broke. Driving "rich people" with small businesses away is not the answer, but I guess the governor doesn't get it. That's what I mean about disliking the politics. And if they pass a certain proposition to stop people from staying here who own businesses out of state, I'll have to go to Dallas fulltime.

I will probably be going to LA for my first time this winter. I'm not sure I'll like it. Was bad enough when I freaked out because I took a wrong turn at Albuquerque (I'm not even kidding) - let alone try to navigate LA.

You know there's a problem when a modern fuel-injected, computer controlled 4-stroke engine channeling exhaust into a catalytic converter is emitting 3 times the smoke as a 30 year old 2-cycle engine burning out the remains of previous lower quality oils, along with built up gum and varnish.

The policy makers do most of their thinking with their heads in a warm, dark place. The smog laws are one reason among many that I choose 2-wheeled transportation. My goal has been to find a completely street legal 2-stroke motorcycle capable of handling freeways, there are a very few that slipped through the cracks, I may be a little closer to reaching that goal. It's little things like this that make me glad not to be a blind sheep.

The auto export business is huge here; I live a mile away from a terminal where the lot is overflowing with anything on wheels destined for Sweden where the cars get through about 3 winters before the floor pans rust out. I had a neighbor who borrowed a trailer from his friend to get a $200 car from Craigslist. While the car sat on the trailer the friend bought the car for $1000. He sold it to someone at the terminal for $5000, and by the time it reached Sweden it fetched $20,000, and it was in a completely unrestored state!
Along with this their buddies put in on group buys from the Summit Racing and Jeg's catalogs, then they stuff as much into each car as they can before it goes on the container

How do you know they are driving illegally or are you saying they won't pass smog? what kind of cars do you see the smoke coming out of? Also around some areas of LA catalytic converters get stolen. I actually don't remember seeing that many of the gardners old toyota pickups giving off giant clouds of smoke. I seem to remember newer American cars doing that more. I also think we should give undocumented liscencses like everyone else so that we keep air cleaner and smog less.
