Between the two of them, I prefer cats. That's why I'm so glad to see all the cat avatars on Wrong Planet (though this thread right now is a bad example). But sometimes, there are threads where you'll see cat avatar upon cat avatar, and I can just go 'dawwww'.

But my favourite animals are birds, reptiles, and insects before mammals. Specifically, I like chickens the most.

I prefer cats. They're quiet. They're low maintenance. They sleep on your belly and pur while you watch TV...

I like both cats and dogs, but I'm agreeable to keeping a dog in the house, but not a cat. I really prefer both to be outdoors animals.

My dog Whiskey hasn't been in the house at all in four or five years. And he couldn't wait to go back outside then. On the other hand, he doesn't mind a barn or shop/garage as long as the door is open. He gets really upset to be locked inside anything.

Cats are gorgeous but... too temperamental in general, purring one moment and trying to bite you the next. Very annoying. I prefer dogs. My dogs have always been glad to see me (I have only one now but in my life I've had three). And she seems so happy and cheerful, even if I don't feel like it I end up smiling. She's a comfort when I'm alone, when I'm sick and a joy when I'm in a good mood or taking her for a walk or in the car, etc. Dogs are great companions whether you're at home, going in the car, taking a walk, etc. And there's a leash law so they can't be let loose to attack the natural creatures in the area. My Pom is a doll and I can't imagine having a cat instead.

I prefer cats, but I adore them both. I currently have one cat and two dogs. I made sure that when we got the dogs they were puppies so my cat could rule over them

I'm totally a cat person, but I like most other animals too except for maybe... dogs. :(
I like a dog if it's friendly and not a type that's been bread to attack and kill like rotties and pitbulls. OH SORRY!! !
I can see the goodness and beauty in animals many other people find ugly or scary like spiders and reptiles, but I don't think I will ever keep a lizard for a pet. Since I was a teenager however, I have had a weakness for guinea pigs. Back then I couldn't have a dog or a cat as a pet because my mother is allergic, so I got two guinea pigs for pets. I had them both for quite a number of years. :)
I used to own a guinea pig named Guido not too long ago, but I sold him when I got my two cats because I was worried I couldn't afford care for all of them. Guinea pig food and wood shavings aren't cheap, and when I went grocery shopping for fresh vegetables they were mostly for Guido!
We did have dogs and cats when I was still a little kid, however. One year just before summer vacation Our parents brought home two puppies for my brother and me. About a month later, after the last day of school one of the puppies wandered out into the street and was killed by a car. I spent nearly the whole summer in grief and my brother thought I was losing it when I started drawing pictures of her as an angel. :( Our second puppy developed a bad bladder problem (maybe from the trauma of losing his sister?) and we couldn't housebreak him so my parents got rid of him near the end of summer, too. We seem to have awful luck with dogs. And I keep my two cats indoors so I don't have to worry about them getting lost, being hit by cars, running into a sadistic cat-hater, getting in fights feral cats, dogs, fleas, ticks, parasites, catching and eating birds and then throwing up feathers on my bed! It's a known fact that cats kept indoors live longer lives although I know how much they love their freedom. In fact I wonder why I sometimes go out into a world I won't let a cat into! 8O

Dogs as cat hairs give me asthma attacks (dog hair does too but not as bad). I like going for long walks with our dog.

I voted cat, but I also love dogs. I've never been interested in a cold-blooded pet though, except a few fish when I was young. Cats have always been my favorites since I was a small child. They're magical creatures, IMO.

While I think I know where you're coming from on that, it's usually the owners that are problems, people who have no business owning a dog that is powerful, needs companionship and training. We had a rottie who was a total sweetheart. But we kept him with us all the time, got obedience training, and watched him really carefully around new people. He was a doll, the best dog I've ever owned. When I brought my female cat home as a 7 week old kitten he adopted her immediately and was her doting "grandpa" until he died. But there are a lot of bad reasons people own and breed pit bulls and rotties, and too often they aren't treated well. It can make them dangerous.

Well I think it's a bit unfair to group Pit bulls in with rotties or say dobies and GSDs, considering that the pit bull is not a guardian dog nor was it bred to defend people or kill people. The american pit bull terrier can tell the difference between a person and an animal. They were bred to fight in pits with other dogs or to take down bulls, but if a dog ever turned on its owner or bit a person out of fear or aggression it was put to sleep as that is not a trait that should be in a dog that is left with children or a foot away from their owner during dog fights in the pit.

A well bred pit bull is very loyal and tolerant of the abuse a child might give it. None the less as a general rule no one should ever leave a small child alone with a dog. Just thought I would clear that up. ;D

I had a cat growing up, a stray I convinced my parents to allow me to take in. Loved the cat and she lived 17 years. Just got my first dogs and love them like crazy. Right now I am stuck at home, so the dogs are great companions and very responsive. If I was away from home a lot (like working) I think it would be better to have a cat, since they don't seem to need as much attention.

Dogs which were bred from wolves are definately pack animals. I am not sure on the lineage of cats, but the wild cats/lions and such vary from fairly solitary to prides.

I refuse to keep a dog that is any danger to another person. If I have a dog that bites someone without more than adequate reason, that dog is going to be either euthanized or shot in the immediate future.

About the only danger my current dog, Whiskey, presents is that he might accidentally knock you over when he runs up to be petted.

Cats are superior. They have more entertaining videos on YouTube. They poop in a box instead of everywhere, such as random places throughout the yard that you later have to go out and find and end up stepping in it. They also aren't all up in your face slobbering and licking.

My mother has a pit bull/Staffordshire type dog... I dunno his actual breed, but he must be a mutt of a couple of 'fighting dogs'... and he's like the personification of peace. He is the most pacifistic, laid-back dog I've ever encountered. And he's quite large.
You can compare him to Daddy the pit bull of Cesar Millan. While it's reasonable to assume that aggressive character traits will be more prevalent among breeds like pit bulls and Staffords, you can't make that assumption for every pit dog individually.

I don't like that dogs are dependent on me for their amusement. I like being around dogs but the time when I have had them living with me it has been too much. So cats then.

My mom's rottweiller is always getting seriously injured by my dog, to the point that they can't be around eachother. She's a boston terrier. He seems to be unable to grasp that he's huge, and refuses to defend himself. He might be brain damaged now that I think about it, a normal reaction for a dog would be to eat a guinea pig, not to snuggle with it, right? If so, he didn't get the memo.

I like both, but if I had to choose, I'd have a cat.
