Wow, Sandy. Let's see...
Can anybody here say "hype"?
This storm was completely underwhelming. Power outages and, if you live within like 5 miles of the ocean, flooding.
Yeeeeah...I'm not gonna say this was any worse than your average thunderstorm. Except maybe for the flooding, which affected the minority of people who were hit by this storm.
Already a million plus without power.
Hardly an average thunderstorm.
You mean in an area populated by over 22 million people, 6.2 million lost power as of Halloween morning? Hmm, still not very overwhelming. Thunderstorms often cause outages for almost 100% of the population in the areas that they affect. ~20% isn't all that massive, New York City or not.
Seriously? This storm cost an estimated 20 billion in damages. Houses and buildings were destroyed- people DIED. How on earth is that not massive? My best friend's car got totaled and everything in her father's house was destroyed. My sister's basement got destroyed, she had to come stay with us because they've had no power, no WATER and no heat. Living like that for 4 days is in fact a big deal and 85% of Long Islanders did not have power, many still don't and don't have running water or heat. I don't even live near the shore and our area sustained a lot of damage from trees falling onto houses and cars. All the main roads here were closed and many still don't have working traffic lights, most of us haven't been able to go to work all week. And on what planet is the Philadelphia area one of the worst hit? It may not have been a big deal to YOU but that sure as hell doesn't mean it isn't a big deal to millions of people.
People die during ordinary thunderstorms (or thunderstorm lines), damage is caused, and contrary to the popular rumor that exists within the immediate NYC vicinity, there is in fact a world outside NYC. Flooding occurs in that outside world, as does damage that prevents people from getting to and from work, among other things. Fear not, for you will survive. The world is not at an end.
