Anyone else alarmed by this whole 'nerd-chic' style?

I don't get hipsters either but I also don't see the point in complaining. The trend can actually be seen as a boon to nerds if they are willing to take advantage of it. You can now embrace your geekery/nerdom without being super ridiculed. It's helped me especialliy in my love life.

Yes, yes there are. Loads of girls here in Taiwan wear them for fun. I personally have big black glasses for vision aid. :?
Nerd chic is cool, that is, if you are a nerd. Posers are just plain ridiculous.

Guess it pays to look like a cross between a biker and a viking. Nobody has said s**t to me about portlandia or big bang theory.

I actually just got the Sheldon Cooper treatment three days ago at a party, from my friend. Couldn't blame her, I was wearing said glasses and a cardigan and high-tops. Sometimes it's just the vibe you send off :D

There is a reason to be angry with some hipsters; if they bullied "nerd/geek/introvert/socially clumsy people" fifteen years ago but now they identify as "nerds/geeks/introverts/socially clumsy" themselves! This would be a good "irony", that by the way is their favourite word.

also, why are womens' jackets so thin? I can't understand why you would pay money for a clothing item that doesn't do anything....shoes too...they are so fragile, and not waterproof at all...I like my lands end all weather mocs I got back in 2003 from Sears....and London fog ranchers jackets/carhart jackets for winter....I still can't wrap my head around fashion....

This is more a problem with how the fashion industry constructs clothes for women, and not so much a problem with the buyers. And then it's only one when there isn't enough variety to choose from. I hear what you're saying, but bash the right thing here. You don't know the reasons someone has for choosing to wear whatever. If someone wants to knowingly buy thin clothes, let them.
And yes the video is really great, I found it in a thread here and I want to show it to everyone :)

Dear gnatterfly,
While shopping in a large upscale department store years ago, I discovered that men's sweaters were thicker and cheaper than women's sweaters.
I also found out that boys' athletic shoes are made sturdier and are roomier in the toes than women's are.
I have only bought men's winter jackets for years...warmer, looser fit, made to last!

I see no reason to dress for other people's opinion of my appearance if it requires me to be uncomfortable!

8O That's hilarious...bizarre.....I've never heard of such a thing.

Edit: I did know about nerdiness being "cool" now because of the Big Bang Theory and shows like it....but I didn't know anyone actually wore glasses to be fashionable. The "geek shik" thing is annoying because (at least some of) the people who like this culture don't actually like socially awkward people.....people who make weird expressions or stare at people unintentionally (like me) still repulse them and yet they think it's cool to say they're "geeks" or "weird".

Vikings would write epic poems about the s**ts I don't give.

@ BanjoGirl: Totally. For some reason that just pisses me off.
@ Sylkat: For this very reason I've had countless fights with my mother who thinks I dresses too "manly" and therefore is a "butch lesbian". She is extremely homophobic and I'm not a lesbian, but I DO despise frilly stuff, cute patterns and find thin slinky clothes annoying.
@ daydreamer84: Yeah, it's pointless. I mean, you can even poke their eyeballs through these glasses. Pair that up with a pout or a duckface and a few polka dot ribbons. Geek? I think not.

people make choices, choices don't make people.
I judge people based on the choices they make, and if you can't handle socially awkward individuals (who are a little too blunt/mean/evil/insert word describing b***h/a**hole here) don't pretend to be one cuz it's the "thing" that your being marketed. The message I get is "Now you can look intelligent and introverted, while just being the same vapid dumb-ass you were when you were still wearing Ugg Boots and a North Face Jacket, Paired with leggings"

This is quite amusing to see the modern hipsters trying to emulate some type of new age intellectual bohemian....I'm cool, edgy and a little unpredictable...but I'm also really really smart because I wear rimmed glasses....LOL!

I actually like the "geek chic" style a lot. I asked for clothes in that style for Christmas, and that's what I got. I'm just irritated that I haven't been able to wear them because it's been so cold outside (as stated earlier in the thread, women's clothes these days are made rather thin).

I also admire nerds/geeks a lot, mostly because I admire anyone who is really passionate/obsessed and knowledgeable about particular subjects. It's because I wish I could find something to be passionate about again, as I have been lacking in the special interest department over the past year or so.
