I love high heels, but I hardly ever wear them because my feet hurt.

That has always been one of my worse nightmares whenever I've worn high heels. Thank goodness she didn't fall! When I saw that, I almost had a panic attack. It wasn't until I saw that she was just fine that I relaxed.

The guard in this picture looks like he's trying not to laugh.
Kate is so graceful, I think she could handle any situation.

I actually love high heels and I wear them frequently. I find them easier to walk in than flats, as when I was a kid, I walked around on my toes with what my mom called "barbie feet", heels feel more like the way I want to walk, it feels wrong for me to walk heel-toe, heel-toe. It's also a source of confusion amongst people I know because I can barely manage going anywhere in flats/sneakers without falling down or tripping but the second I put a pair of high heels on, I'm like a gazelle.

And to the gentleman who doesn't like heels because they make women slow and inefficient, I've been asked by men to please "slow the walk down" so that they can catch up to me when I have 3" heels on. So ... there.

Some women do not feel feminine without high heels...it is probably the culture they grew up in.

A culture which identifies femininity with impracticality. It’s the same principle behind foot binding: the more encumbered they are, the less they can fend for themselves and the more they depend on men, thus guaranteeing their faithfulness. A culture where women are free should ditch that principle.

In addition, the arching of the back high heels induce subtly mimics lordosis behavior, thus sending men a subliminal message that the woman is aroused and sexually receptive when she most likely isn’t (not for a random man receiving the signal, at least), just like makeup does.

Since I learned about the effects of wearing high heels on the woman’s body, I find it quite disturbing to see them torture their naturally graceful feet and legs like that.

This.

Personally, I couldn't walk in heels to save my life.

I usually can't find nice heels in my size. Darn my luck!

I think it's simple, if you like high heels, wear them. If you don't like them, don't wear them.

No. I feel too high and uncomfortable, and I could fall as well. Altought I did enjoy wearing them when I was younger, but only for fun.

Fortunately, they’re probably the least likely kind of footwear to save your life, unless stepping on something with a heel is part of the tactic.

It makes a huge difference if you invest in a well made shoe. Shop sales frequently, you might find a pair in budget.

I always preferred to wear shoes with about a two inch chunky heel.

I concur on the point of both quality and sturdiness. My husband wanted me to try them, and he found me a really nice pair of Fryes on a clearance. They are among the only shoes I have ever owned which were comfortable right out of the box; I wore them an entire day of walking and my feet were only as sore as they would have been in any of my flats, just from being on my feet all day.

I also have a pair by El Naturalista, also found on clearance, which have a 1 inch heel and an incredibly durable sole and grippy tread. They actually improve my posture, which is naturally terrible. They are also great because they are cut wider near the toe, which makes them very comfortable.

That said, I do prefer my flats because I am always out walking in the woods and fields, and heels get caught on tree roots or slip on stones... So only practical for specific, mostly-indoor things. I wouldn't want to wear them to walk very far even in town, because our town is very hilly and has many very old sidewalks. I did not think it worth the expense for a long time given the impracticalities, but because of the posture issue, they boost my confidence (and height!) a little at dressy social occasions and I think that alone has made them worth some degree of expenditure. I never would have paid their full retail price though. Couldn't have afforded it!

I once wore them to an outdoor wedding and the heels sank into the ground.

No - retail is outrageous. I've gotten some great deals secondhand. People give away nice stuff!

I like the way they look, but they hurt my feet.Plus I'm klutzy,so the odds of me falling down while wearing them are pretty good. I would have to put them on in my car,no sidewalk and the same thing happens that Ann2011 mentioned, you sink into the ground.
I think they are suppose to be bad on your back.I have a friend that broke a heel going down some steps, she was bruised up pretty bad.If she hadn't been holding on to the banister it could have been worse.I'd wear them somewhere special as long as I could stay seated most of the time.

This.

With regard to the bolded part, There's an encumberment that has to do with wealth as well as sexuality. Men have worn heels in various periods. I think it can be a bit of a status symbol. . . Showing that the wearer is free of practical concerns.

But, most of the time, heels worn by men did have practical purposes, like preventing the shoe from sliding off a stirrup.
