Let's Talk About Culture!
Wisconsin is known for its cheese. Fans of one of its sports teams are called cheeseheads for instance. Lots of farms and dairy cows in Wisconsin.
Also there's Milwaukee breweries, accounting for the beer. I hadn't heard of sausage before with Wisconsin.
That's cheese on top. The food pyramid seems pretty accurate, to other Midwestern states as well really. Big meat and dairy eaters.
You'll probably have to look this stuff up unless you're from a rural PA area. A lot of it is designed to fill you up so you're ready to raise a barn.
1. Chicken and Waffles - Pennsylvania dutch chicken and waffles. I'm not talking about that "let's have a piece of fried chicken and a waffle because we're fat" crap. This is a waffle covered in gravy sauce with chicken in the sauce.
2. Chicken and dumplings - Sort of a stew but cooked under a layer of fluffy dumplings on the top. Again, not the stuff you would find in a restaurant like cracker barrel. Their dumplings are surpisingly similar to the noodles in the next dish...
3. Ham Pot Pie - This is another stew like dish. It is cooked with ham and vegetables with some very thick dough mixed in. If you want to experience the type of dough then get chicken and dumplings from The Cracker Barrel
4. Pork and Sauerkraut - Often slow cooked for many hours. Pork becomes extremely tender and picks up delicious taste from the sauerkraut. Eaten with mashed potatoes. I have a friend who says he creates a volcano of mashed potatoes and covers it with the deliciousness.
5. My favorite: local ice cream from a place called Ritchey's Dairy - You can't beat a local ice cream place, especially one in a state like Pennsylvania which is loaded with diary farms. I can only guess that they make some good ice cream in Wisconsin as well, but can't attest to this as I've never been. After moving to Georgia local ice cream is what I miss most.
