Who pronounces it that way? I have never heard anyone say it that way.

tv announcers more often than not, say that, especially network announcers. I remember a tv show on nbc back in the 70s called "the Oregon trail" and the announcers back then said "o-re-gone."

I really like Texas, well the beaches in the south & then the river walk in San Antonio.

when I was stationed in texas [fort sam Houston] in the mid-80s, I remember that the riverwalk was a respite from the texas heat, a cool jazzy place that they actually filmed a movie at ["cloak and dagger" in 1984].

The coast and beaches are excellent but the more inland you go the more methed out it gets. Portland is a nice place to visit, though. Especially for shopping since there's no sales tax.
