Before minimum wage laws that covered wait service employees, I was a larger tipper. That said, having worked as a cabbie (taxi driver) in my past, I tend to over tip a lot when the service is really good.

There are some restaurants here in the US that pay the workers a better than minimum wage & the tips go to the owners & customers aren't informed about it. One like that was on the show Kitchen Nightmares.

Years ago on the radio there were talking about a survey that was one for people who tip the least & they were
Teachers~ educators don't make much here in the US, my mom was one.
Minimum wage workers~ no explanation needed.
People on government income~ like retired seniors on Social Security, those on Social Security Disability, veterans, welfare, SSI ect.
The very rich~ they wouldn't be as rich if they weren't cheap with others.

Never less than 35% regardless quality of service. Sometimes I tip more than cost of meal.

Twenty percent of the actual bill (not including tax) unless the waitperson behaved like an absolute jackwagon. Jackwagon-ness is rewarded accordingly.

Honestly, even so I live in a country where people don't tip (France) because the service is included in the price, I still tip, here I'll between 5 and 10%
When I'm in the US I give between 13 and 15%.
Other parts of the world I usually give 10%
But once in China, I left a tip on the table and when walking out the restaurant the waiter came back to me with the money saying I forgot it, I tried to explain to him that is what we do in the west, but he didn't understood the custom of tipping.

I have never been to a country where tipping is common. I have to say having to worry about tips is another factor that discourages me from visiting the US. The uncertainty involved in tipping sounds very uncomfortable. If you tip too much, you lose money unnecessarily and if you give too little, you look stingy and that can be embarrassing. I would hate to have to worry about that kind of thing each time I go to a restaurant. I would probably end up just going to supermarkets and buying some ready-to-eat stuff even if I'm a tourist. How do the waiters/waitresses make a living there if they don't have a fixed guaranteed amount of money coming into their bank account every fortnight/month?

The restaurant's supposed to pay them the difference between what they make in tips & minimum wage if they make less than that.

Questions routinely asked by the US Border Patrol:
1) May I see your passport?
2) Do you have anything to declare?
3) How long will you be staying?
4) What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
and . . .(wait for it) . . .
5) What are your views on tipping?

I've been in the business a long time, and I've never seen that actually happen.

I've never been a fan of tipping. It was a pleasure to visit countries where the price on the menu is the price you pay, period. Still, it's the system we have, and if you don't tip you're a jerk.

Wait staff get around 20%, rounding. I often pay with plastic but tip with cash, and rather than counting out $9.23 I'll leave a ten on the table.

Bartenders get $1 per beer they open and put in front of me. If I ever order something labor-intensive like a Bloody Mary I'll make it $3-4.

Guys who bring pizza or other food to my door get a minimum of $5, rounding up freely. Here I usually just pay cash, so if the total is $33.70 he gets $40, keep the change. More if it's raining or something.

If the service is good, I tip around 20%. If the service is bad, I tip the table. Just kidding. If the service is not all that great, I tip around 10%.

Whenever I can get work, I LOVE being a waitress (not very Aspie, I know), because I make my own paycheck, basically. A waitress in the U.S. makes $3.63 an hour. Tips are our income!! ! As for an employer making-up the difference----"Yeah, right!! !"----NEVER happens!! !

As for what I tip: 20 percent!! Now, if the service is SUPER BAD, I usually.... like, if it's me and one other person eating, I'll leave 2 dollars----THAT'S IT!! ! Because I love waitressing so much, and I work for my money, if you don't like being a waitress (hence, you're a bad one), GET OUT of the field!! ! When I was in catering, I made tips when no one else did!!

As for the grocery delivery person: $5. (Pizza delivery.... probably, a couple of bucks)

As for the cab: 20 percent.

As for that poll, back there: I'm a veteran, and on Disability!!

I usually tip the pizza delivery guy about $3 but I live fairly close & lots of times the pizza isn't great. I would tip more if I was further away or the pizza & breadsticks were pretty good most of the times I ordered. Things should be hot, unburnt & pizza shouldn't be piled to one side like it was held or sitting at an angle.

I don't remember what I learned about the minimum wage in high school perfectly. I think I remember that the minimum wage in Ontario is lower for waiters/waitresses than it is for other professions on the assumption that they are tipped. I tip for that reason. I recently looked it up and apparently it's incorrect. I'm still going to tip. I don't know why but I'll still tip.

It seems like tipping standards are based on social convention though. I've heard people say that 15% is standard. I've heard others say that 20% is standard. I guess that tipping standards should change with inflation.

Personally I tip around 17% or 18%. It never comes out cleanly. I tip in amounts that look nice. I don't tip $16.37 just because it needs to be exactly 15% or 20%. It usually comes out somewhere in between but it's never a pretty percentage. Sometimes it's 17.73%.
