I lived like that when I rented a room from a family. Now fortunately I have my own tiny apartment with a storage space in the basement, so instead of piling up s**t in my room I throw it in the basement. I have lots of stuff there that I just keep because I'm afraid there's something important buried in that mess. Chances are it'll all just stay there for years until I perhaps move or something, at which point I'll probably just take it all to the municipal rubbish dumb. That day I'll probably feel like a burden was lifted from my shoulders, like an angel on clouds.

] was to mark off little sections that I would clean and be done with that section, then move onto the next section, and so forth, until the whole place was tidy. having to do the whole thing at once is an insuperable thing but not bits at a time which anybody can do.

I also have a bit of a hoarding problem, mainly with books and newspapers...

Hoarding problem yeah I have that to some extent, hence all that junk in the basement. A lot of times instead of getting rid of junk right away I keep it even though I really don't need it, and then I don't have the energy to comb through it and just pile it all up somewhere, like in the basement.
I think a teacher said to me that the state of our lockers is a reflection of our mental state. I have much later come to the insight that in that case, i.e. being in school, any form of mental disorder is a sign of sensitivity and sanity. I had a period where I tried hard to be the other way around in school, get good grades etc. Then my locker was Nazi strict. I cleaned out my room at home to the extent of being sterile. And only focused on school work. Later I crashed though, to find a much better thing, psychosis. (yes, better than career and girlfriends)

Oh, THAT'S good!! Yeah, I, pretty much, just have those little paths, TOO. I'll get real ambitious, every once-in-awhile, and, like YOU said, clean an area----but, STILL, no one, but me, would know I had made any progress, cuz it's STILL, a MESS!!
Do you live in one of those little, silver travel-trailers? That's what I've always pictured, when you've said "tin can".
The reason why it's bothering me so much, right NOW, is because of what Tomato said----I've lost stuff. It USED to be that..... I've ALWAYS had piles of crap----but, I knew what was in each and every pile----and, right where to find it----NOW, it's just totally out-of-control!!
Oh, and HOARDING----that's ANOTHER thing. Like, if you've ever seen a segment on TV where somebody helps a hoarder (I've heard about that show on cable, but I don't have cable), I don't hoard like that----like, those people go-out and buy stuff, and bring it home, and put it in the corner, or something----I don't buy tons of stuff----I just don't ever throw anything, AWAY!!
Also, someone said something about books and newspapers, I think. Well, for ME, it's that as well!! I've always wanted to be a fashion designer, so I have about a thousand-and-one Vogue magazines. I'll study the designers, and the fashions, and then pile 'em up. Plus, all of my books----I could practically open my own, small library----everything from fashion design, to medicinal herbs, to politics, to autobiographies----and, of course, the obligatory novels!! LOL What got me so desirous, recently, to clean-up, is that I'm missing a couple of treasured BOOKS----and, THAT is just not acceptable!!
