No, I think they should stay. Things would be slightly more expensive without them.

But seriously, it looks inevitable that the British penny will disappear before long, as that's what happens to the lowest denomination of coins under an inflationary economic system.

In 1960 the Farthing, worth one quarter of an Old Penny, was withdrawn from circulation. Then the Halfpenny ("Ha'penny") ceased to be legal tender in 1969. Under the new decimal coinage system, introduced in 1971, there was again a Halfpenny, worth more than the Old Penny, but that was in turn withdrawn in 1984. It's astonishing the decimal penny has lasted so long, in my opinion, and it's become fairly common practice in some shops to give no change for a 99p item, if the customer pays with a £1 coin.

Unbelievably, in some parts of the British Empire, there used to be One Third Farthings and even Quarter Farthings.




Am I right in thinking that in the USA Cents are referred to as 'pennies'? Is there still a 1 Cent coin?

never mind that people make knick knacks from crushing and deforming them, but you know it is time for them to go when most places don't accept them and producing one costs ore than it's value.

and it is a bit silly how long it took me to realize they are no longer made from copper, at least not more than three percent.
