Dear NewTime.

80s music is a bit too modern. I grew up with 60s-70s music. :)

Even though I grew up in the 60's and 70's and really like classic rock the new wave/post punk/synthpop/alternative rock music spectrum of the late 1970's to late 1980's spoke to my aspieness decades before I had a clue I was autistic. I related to the monotone vocals, the stop start structure of the songs and quirkiness of presentation, the innovative spirit. Often the singers did not get the girls. As time wore on the song topics became more typical pop fare and music more typical pop hooks but you you still technical innovation so in my view the 80's synthpop along with the 1960's are the best for pure pop music.

Quikeness and nerdness are so unbiquitous in the culture to the point of cliche. Back then seeing quirky artists doing it on thier own terms and seeing them get a decent size fan base showed me bieng different was not only okay but could be fun at times. While radio in most of the country remaimed hostile to this music only playing it grudingly when it became popular we had a local station that dived into it full bore whose slogan was "Dare to Different"

After I left this thread last night, I spent some time watching 80's videos mostly for nostalgia. I noticed something & asked my spouse about it. Unlike today's stars, the men in the videos back then were not muscular & the women were not especially curvy. I thought it was more about people just being more natural but my spouse reminded me of a fashion fact I'd long forgotten: The 1980's were known stylistically for a certain androgyny, or at least gravitating toward the center or selectively crossing over for both men and women. Think shoulder pads for women, tight pants/leggings for men. And then there were Boy George, Pete Burns, Peter Robinson/Marilyn, Annie Lennox, Grace Jones, and the rest...

it has been my experience that back in the 80s there were far more slender people than is the case nowadays.

I like the spandex metal scene of the 1980's best, with the new wave sound a close second. As a non-dancer, I never really got into the oversynthesised "pop" of that decade although I'll admit hearing it on the radio sure beats the hiphop/rap and buzzsaw grungerock of today.

I like a lot of 80s music and I wasn't born until 1991. Some of my favorites are the hair metal bands like Def Leppard and Poison.

I like everything about the 80s. Everything except the horrible clothes that my family and I wore at the time  I have so many vivid childhood memories and the oldest are the ones I cherish the most.
There's something about the music I'll always love. The melodies, combinations of instruments. I've always been in love with electronic sounds, various kinds of experimental and futuristic music, how could I feel indifferent to the decade where electronica found its inspiration ?

Good taste, Kenya.

I like most things about the 1980's with the "preppy" culture being the only major exception. That could likely explain the "horrible clothes" Miss A. mentioned above.

I like a wide range of music from the dawn of recorded sound up until the 90s or so. the last 15 years though, IMHO just isn't my cup of tea.

I thought there were quite a few promising acts in the first two or three years of the decade - stuff like OMD, The Human League, XTC, The Pretenders, Eurythmics, even Duran Duran and Dollar. The whole thing fell apart after that though, symbolized by rubbish like Wham's Wake Me Up Before You Go Go which got to number one in 1984. There was still the odd memorable song for me though, such as Duel by Propaganda (1985), Heaven Is A Place On Earth by Belinda Carlisle (1987) and Orinoco Flow (Enya, 1988).
