I thought that ANZAC Day was only about World War I. After all, there hasn't been an Australian and New Zealand Army Corps since then. And we also have Remembrance Day to remember the World Wars. I think it's important that we remember the wars, but I think we have to remember them as tragedies. I worry that ANZAC Day is starting to become an occasion for glorifying the horrors of the past, especially by the Prime Minister and his minions.
Yeah, they're always talking about "the men and women brave enough to defend our country", but I see it more as "the men and women brave enough to take orders from the Australian Government in a warzone".
I often wonder how the army EVER managed to get people to sign up after that monumental cockup in WWI.
Stupidity and patriotism aren't mutually exclusive, but it is possible to be one without the other (I'm talking mostly about patriotism without stupidity). I also doubt that you will find that many atheists in the army......
However, this war in Iraq wasn't like the first one, where Iraq invaded Kuwait. THAT could be put in the ballpark of a 'just war', though some things that happened may preclude that. The wars in the Slavic countries was more justifiable. But this? This is about invasion for economic and ideological reasons. Supposing Dubya and Co did actually intend to stamp out terrorism, and the oil was a pleasant bonus (a scenario I seriously doubt)? In doing this, they have merely increased hatred against Western states.
This is not what ANZACs fought for. (The institution may not have survived WWI, but it's general spirit lives on) They fight for the cessation of war, not its continuance.
I still think ANZAC day should be important.
