Run, march...

They were as good as dead anyway. The madness of General Melchett in Blackadder Goes Forth? Probably true, most of the time. It's like chucking steaks into a large industrial fan and hoping one gums up the works.....

Well, either way they still would be shot. But man, looks like they actually did have a General Melchett type person.

But I suppose since most of WWI was a war of attrition that's about all they could do. But I'm not really shure since World War One isn't my forte.

We have the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior literally a few meters from my High School. It's stupid because we're not allowed to go there anymore because some idiots keep vandalizing it. F$&#ING HELL!! DON'T YOU CARE ABOUT OUT OR PAST OR ARE YOU JUST IGNORANT!?!

Yeah I know, but WWI started it.

As for vandals, I don't think they're any special kind of stupid, people are just generally stupid, self centred and disrespectful due to being uneducated.

Heck if I were to take up tagging and stuff at least I'll be generous! I'd also make it readable, some graffiti can be IMPOSSIBLE to read (Japanese Graffiti 8O )

I thought that ANZAC Day was only about World War I. After all, there hasn't been an Australian and New Zealand Army Corps since then. And we also have Remembrance Day to remember the World Wars. I think it's important that we remember the wars, but I think we have to remember them as tragedies. I worry that ANZAC Day is starting to become an occasion for glorifying the horrors of the past, especially by the Prime Minister and his minions.

Hello to all Aussies, Kiwis and Turks!

What did you do for ANZAC day today?

For those from other parts of the world who don't know, today is the day we commemorate a very stupid military order during world war one that resulted in the death of over 8000 Australian and New Zealand troops as they were told to march into very heavy Turkish machine gun fire.

Yeah, they're always talking about "the men and women brave enough to defend our country", but I see it more as "the men and women brave enough to take orders from the Australian Government in a warzone".

I often wonder how the army EVER managed to get people to sign up after that monumental cockup in WWI.

Stupidity and patriotism aren't mutually exclusive, but it is possible to be one without the other (I'm talking mostly about patriotism without stupidity). I also doubt that you will find that many atheists in the army......

However, this war in Iraq wasn't like the first one, where Iraq invaded Kuwait. THAT could be put in the ballpark of a 'just war', though some things that happened may preclude that. The wars in the Slavic countries was more justifiable. But this? This is about invasion for economic and ideological reasons. Supposing Dubya and Co did actually intend to stamp out terrorism, and the oil was a pleasant bonus (a scenario I seriously doubt)? In doing this, they have merely increased hatred against Western states.

This is not what ANZACs fought for. (The institution may not have survived WWI, but it's general spirit lives on) They fight for the cessation of war, not its continuance.

I still think ANZAC day should be important.

I agree with you. In fact, I think more emphasis should be placed on Remembrance Day as well. I do think, though, that we need to defend ANZAC Day from those who want us to celebrate, rather than lament, the events that led to it. I think that ANZAC Day is a day to remember those who died (for pretty bad reasons in the case of World War I, at least) not for celebrating past victories.
