I type the free finger way without my fingers touching the proper keys.

My mother tried to get me to type like that, but I don't. It never felt comfortable to me.

Be honest. Is there anyone here who actually does this?

I have never used this in any post. I'm not even using it now. I just look at the keys and find the letters ... because I learned absolutely nothing from typing lessons.

Oh yes, but it wasn't the teacher that first showed me how. I'm kind of old (think "geezer") and my mother had a manual typewriter when I was in the 4th grade. I got a typing textbook, and taught myself how to do it. Is it any wonder that I'm an Aspie? I mean, who else but an Aspie would do this in the 4th grade?

It did pay off though, because I signed up for typing class in the 7th grade, and set records on the teacher's typing tests. I remember clocking something like 132 words per minute. Funny thing though, this did nothing to attract any of the girls in that class--I was one of maybe two guys taking the class. In those days, typing wasn't a guy's racket.

Typing probably was one of the most useful things I ever learned. I've met a few people who can type pretty damned fast using two to five fingers. It just means they devised their own method. The "official" method in your original post is a pretty effective way to use a keyboard and, once the "touch typing" method is learned, one doesn't have to look at the keyboard while typing which can be quite useful too.

Well, there's no joke intended in there.

Yes, I touch type the way they taught us in middle school, but I started using a different keyboard layout (Colemak instead of QWERTY) four or five years ago, so I essentially had to re-learn the keys.

When I was in AR class in elementary school (it's this class where you would have to read books and then take computer quizzes about it, and for each question you got right, you would get a point, and if you got enough points that semester, you could go on these things called 'AR trips' where the school would pay for you and every other kid that had enough to go and do something fun like going to the beach or movies) you had to type out the name of the book you read, and I felt really rushed, and that's why I never learned the right way. Besides, my iPad screen is too small to do it the right way.

I used to be a spectacular touch-typist.
I could even touch type on my iPad.
Now, not so much.

Yes, I "type in the correct way". Often, I'll be typing and hear something on the TV and turn my head to watch it, while continuing to type----it's very convenient to be able to do that; and, even-though I've been typing for over 40 years, I'm still surprised when I make so few mistakes, while watching TV, at-the-same-time.

Back-in-the-day, we learned shorthand, as well----that's REALLY convenient; no prying eyes when you're taking notes in class.

Why did you care whether people looked at your lecture notes?

It wasn't about them looking at my notes, per se----it was more about that creepy feeling you get when someone's watching you / looking over your shoulder. I didn't mind sharing my notes with some people (as in, giving them my notes after class)----but, with others, I DID mind, cuz people won't take care of your stuff / RESPECT your stuff, like you would (that's why I quit loaning books, TOO----my aunt actually returned a book, I'd loaned her, to the library; and then, LAUGHED about it).

I've never typed 'correctly'. Well, at least I use both hands  Mostly the index and middle fingers.

I totally relate to feeling creeped out by someone getting a look at notes I'm taking even when there's nothing about my notes that's particularly embarrassing -- I just feel very, very private about stuff like that. Notes to oneself in any situation can be personal, odd, a bit silly, etc. and you would just rather keep them to yourself.

I usually pay for things by card and recently wanted to do a separate shop by cash, but I knew I would forget and just take my card out of my wallet instead. So I put a post-it note on my wallet "PAY WITH CASH" and I felt embarrassed when the person next to me saw the note. No real reason why, but sometimes you just feel a bit "private" about something you've written for your own use.

That's the same for me- not just personal notes either. When we did tasks that we were to deliver to the teacher afterwards, the teacher would sometimes wander the classroom while we wrote, and when she glanced at me, I couldn't stop myself from leaning over my paper. I just hate it when people look at what I'm doing when I'm doing it, even when it's something I have to share afterwards.

That drives me nuts, yes! Someone watching me while I work -- I actually start messing up. It makes me creeped out and nervous.
