Yes, at worst I struggle to understand what they even mean. At best it's really annoying that people can't pronounce words correctly or use proper grammar. I think less of people who can't handle speaking their native language.

I assumed it was from a poor education system.

I'd rather use the French term biblioteque(sp?).

While I was trained as a librarian, I'm quite disgusted by the profession nowadays. It's bad enough that the American Library Association deems me to be a non-person because I received my Masters from a school not accredited by the American Linrary Association, but to see a Starbucks inside a library is disgusting. To me, it goes against the ideals the great Baltimore philantrphist, Enoch Pratt, set for his gift to the public, namely, the poor man's university. And people wonder why I haven't set foot in a library for years...

not as much as it annoys me when people say caramel like care-am-el instead of car-mal.

So the second "a" is supposed to be silent? Looking at the word, it makes sense to me to break it up into car-a-mel, and therefore pronounce it care-a-mel (or care-am-el).

No, language is naturally fluid and inherently subjective. There's no reason it need be pronounced "lie-brar-ee" aside from that it's how most people pronounced it when they put it in the dictionary.

They can handle speaking their native tongue. Grammar and pronunciation varies depending on the dialect. In the case of "library", it can be annoying, but it's not a sign of illiteracy or incompetence as some people seem to think.

right.

other times, people are just too tired or nihilistic to give a damn. *i* say, pronounce it however you bloody please, as long as people know what you're referring to.

i do sometimes wish english was more like spanish, with a more transparent orthography and with words whose spellings can be easily determined by hearing it, but it isn't, and it will never be, so there's really no point in getting pedantic over such minor and trivial things.

as long as people know what you're referring to...it shouldn't really matter much.

I found it funny when the librarian on the Nickelodeon show All That pronounced it like lie-barry
