It will take great change. Humanity needs strong leadership. There is either the option of a communist system or capitalism can continue if humanity starts mining asteroids and recycling more.

The BBC told me it will expand and engulf the Earth in 4.5 billion years

Heh, that's too far into the future to be our concern. Humanity will have colonized new planets and solar systems by then, I am certain.

Yes. Even tens of thousands of years into the future is too far to worry about. I reckon that technology will come to a near standstill and there will be a dark period by the 30th century. Technology has to come to a stop somewhere... and at the rate of humanity's advancement, there will be FTL travel in a century and a half at the most. The more technology there is, the faster the rate of technological acceleration. We've seen a huge leap with the invention of the computer, too.

Immortality... well, extended life will happen soon enough, I don't know about immortality. Give it 200 years.
