My astronomy professor, and his text book, always said that Pluto was "about 4000 miles wide, about the size of Mars" which happens to be midway between the Moon (2000 miles wide), and Earth (8000 miles wide). Later they revived that downward to being only slightly bigger than the Earth's moon. Now we know that Pluto is only 1400 miles wide (smaller than the Earth's moon).
