Goths, as we know them, became a youth culture thing in the Eighties. Not as far back as hipsters., but the scene has been around for a while now. And doesn't seem likely to go away.

And the term derives from the "Goth" in "Gothic literature". And Gothic literature (spooky stuff, horror, etc) goes back to the late 1700's. So in a way you could say that "goths have always been around".

I knew plenty of what are now called "Goth" kids in high school in the 1970s. All they didn't have was the name. They had the outfits and the philosophy. They were called "new-wavers."

They didn't care too much for me...

Im a true non-confotmist in that I dress how I want and do what I want. I've always been that way. :D
