I spent so much of my childhood/early teens alone listening to R4 that I ended up with a ridiculously posh speaking voice: I was misunderstood as patronising & arrogant all through my small, rural, overwhelmingly working class high school.
I’ve found adults less judgemental about speech oddities though: there is hope for that issue easing as you get older, and the people around you do too.

Yes, as an adult it’s a strength: I’m a self employed tradesman and it definitely helps put my (mostly elderly) customers at ease And, yes again, teenage humans are on average the worst for low-level nastiness & defining themselves as good by putting others down: it’s a trial to be sure. But a few years and you’ll be through it: and hopefully stronger mentally for it.

I do garden maintenance and improvements, most of what I do is routine and repetitive: but with the odd occasion where I have to teach myself a new skill as I do it. Which is very satisfying when you manage it.Most of my customers are elderly widows or spinsters, mostly fundamentalist Christians: although that’s been an eye opener, they’re much more varied, and tolerant, in their attitudes and outlooks than stereotypes would lead you to believe.
Nursing can be a great career, two of my wife’s aunts are nurses: from what they say it’s rewarding and demanding in equal measures.
Don’t know anything about hairdressers: I start to panic if anyone I don’t know is holding a blade within ten feet of me!
So my wife does my hair.
Time’s a funny thing: I can remember one term seeming like an eternity of suffering stretching ahead of me, but looking back the whole of high school seems so brief.

That does sound like a really fun and interesting job you have. Meeting different people sounds scary but it sounds like they are mostly sweet and interesting people to meet and talk to. You must like the repetitive nature of the job, as well as enjoy learning new skills along the way. I don't have many skills but I'm always eager to learn something new so long as it's not going to trigger me. I do like the idea of nursing as it does look challenging but also rewarding. Hairdressing I'm interested in but not sure if I have it in me to do that. I don't even like having my own hair cut so...
I wonder if that's what it will be like for me in a few years time? Right now it seems to have lasted an eternity and looks to last for another eternity.

yep, it’s always scary the first few times with a new customer: having a massive sack full of tools helps me feel ‘proper’ and ‘legitimate’ though.
Yes: I remember the feeling of caught between two tortuous eternities very well.
However, I was undiagnosed, male and survived rather than coped: so I suspect if you want any tips on how to get through it on a day to day basis there are better people to ask around here!
