in general people seem to be more accepting of high risk when they are in charge, such as with driving as opposed to being exposed to a virus. also it's a part of daily life for many millions.

That is an excellent answer. People fear what they cannot control. They fear being trapped with no way out.

Often they do not integrate probability theory into their assessment of risk.

But if you can mitigate the threat, it can reduce the level of fear. When I was small, I was stung by almost a hundred yellow jackets at once. Hurt like hell for awhile. Even now I will be stung occasionally by various kinds of bees. But my wife seems to run into their nest often. I have a bee keeper outfit. If she gets bitten, I protect myself and destroy the nest. No fear, just caution and protection.

There are many car accidents. But I have learned defensive driving techniques which I practice all the time. I have put over a million miles on the road. The last time I had a car accident was around 1971 when I was young and immature.

Coronovirus is the least of my worries.

The fear isn't totally irrational. While there are many auto accidents, the incidence has been consistently low over a very long time, so auto accidents aren't likely to overwhelm our health system. Or, put another way, we have enough infrastructure to deal with 5000 auto accidents a day, more or less evenly spread out over the USA.

But, if everyone got sick at once, routine assistance like oxygen tanks wouldn't be available to all who need it.

If there were 5000 auto accidents in one city in one day, would assistance be available to all who need it?

I was adressing the fear many people have of catching the coronavirus and dying.

It's an understandable fear. I have gotten gripped by it briefly a few times. So I reason with myself. I think about everyday things like being in a car, that puts me in greater danger than the chances of catching this virus, so far.

I think you raised an important point here: logistics. On organisational level, we are adapted to our everyday dangers like traffic. A new danger requires an intermediate stage of chaos before the society learns and adopts the routines to deal with it.

If my parents catch the virus they will die no doubt. The fear is justified.

Idiots in cars speeding to get toilet paper and other supplies concern me a lot. I don't want to risk any more car accidents.

This doesn't really make me any less afraid of coronavirus. It just makes me more afraid of crossing the street and being near these coffins of glass and steel driven by people who can't read the directions on a stop sign.

And once there is no healthcare because covid 19 has swamped the system far more of these traffic accidents will be fatal. Lockdowns also prevent car accidents competing with respiratory cases for intensive care beds.

Of course people should be worried about car accidents too, it isn't an either or situation. Covid 19 is a huge threat that can potentially leave us without any healthcare at all. 20% of people get severe symptoms. Imagine the numbers! It could hospitalise 20% of the people you know. No town has enough hospital beds or doctors to cope with that, even the richest.

Once the beds are full young people will die in greater numbers too.

Even if you are willing to write off your older family members what about the people providing the services you use? What about all that experience expertise and knowledge in the heads of the people who will die? Society will change because of this, it isn't strong responses that will do the most damage but weak ones.

An economic pause is needed. They really should have suspended the stock markets a while ago because they can't function in this environment.

It can't be stopped unless people stop denying it. Just like climate change, only much more in your face.

I heard here in the US, more people die as a result of gun violence than people who die cuz of traffic accidents. The gun industry is using this virus threat as a marketing strategy by advertising guns as part of an essential survival pack or to protect yourself from zombies.

The difference is that road crashes aren’t highly contagious and can’t spread like viruses.

See why these two aren’t comparable?
