Gorillas and chimps been observed to kill leopards. A silverback could probably scare off a black bear attacking the gorilla troupe. But in a determinded one and one fight the black bear would win. Both animals are roughly the same in weight. But bears are built to be predators. Claws and the right teeth. The gorilla might be able to even the odds by grabbing logs to use as a club, or by throwing rocks.

My money's on the gorilla. People have fought off black bears be landing a punch on their snout. Black bears are pretty small.

It's fair to suggest that certain defensive situations might alter the odds. But, what if we put a baby bear on the other side of the troupe? Momma Bear is defending the cub, but Papa Silverback is defending the troupe.

Seriously, they're just going to unite against us for tormenting them soon.

The bears came for the pears.
My dogs took umbrage and all the bears went up the trees.Mama in one and a tree for each cub.
Papa had visited several days earlier and was bitten on his bear butt by my Catahoula. He also went up a tree.
The gorilla was sensible and never made an appearance.

A gorilla can easily overpower a black bear if inspired to do so. Black bears are relatively small within a bear context.

A brown bear—that’s another story.

I had no idea that american black bears were larger than asian ones. I'd like the gorilla to win, mainly because I was a bit scared of bears, tigers, leopards when I cycled around India. Every time I got beyond the fields and houses they were somewhere in the back of my mind and it detracted from the beauty for me. I got stuck in the jungle for a night in my tent and found it pretty scary listening to the sound of what was probably just a mouse outside the tent and the sound of a fox barking.
