When in college, I went to an off-campus party with some friends. My friend Karen had a car, didn't like to drink alcohol, so she volunteered to drive us there and back. We were a few miles away from the party when a deer ran into the road. Karen's car hit the deer, and killed it. None of us in the car were hurt, aznd the damage to the car was relatively minor, but Karen felt absolutely awful, she was crying, and a couple of my friends went to hug and console her to assure her things would be alright.

I was quiet for the first couple minutes, wondering what I could say to make Karen less sad. After careful deliberation of the best thing to say, I finally said, "It's OK Karen, they're overpopulated anyway." While it was true about deer being overpopulated in that area, I soon learned that this was not the sort of statement that a person who's just hit and killed a deer with their car wants to hear

Over the next couple years, those friends occasionally reminded me of my sincere attempt to console Karen, usually followed by a lot of laughs at my expense.

I've done that, I remember years ago when I was working someone had their hair cut very short after having their hair long, I said out loud "I don't like her hair" she happened to be in front of me, she turned around and said "thanks very much"
