Yes we do have it pretty good and even the poor people have it good as well compared to 3rd world countries.

Ok, what do poor people more specifically homeless people in the USA have that those in third world nations don't have exactly? What is the difference between a homeless person in the USA vs one in Uganda for example?

There lies the problem. This is stated about as though it is fact without explaining how or going into specifics?

Poor people still live in big houses compared to places in Europe. They all have a refrigerator and a stove and running water and food. I don't mean big houses like mcmansions. I mean more like 1200 sq foot homes. My sister in law lived in a home that was on low income housing and they paid part of the rent and she paid her share of it and so did my in laws until they bought a mobile home that was rent to own.

Yes we do have a homeless problem as well, it has increased here in Portland around 2013 when rent skyrocketed. We have the nickname "tent city" for their homeless sites. But even as a poor person who isn't homeless you still have it better.

We have programs like foodstamps, low income housing, section 8.

All of what you said is true. These are well thought out answers that you gave.

The rural poor still own land. What is know here as being“land poor.”
Maybe you don’t have much money coming in,but you have your own firewood, possibly own water source, a garden spot, a chance to hunt or fish for food, and your own home ,however humble.

I don't hate America anymore, I just hate knowing that this country isn't as fair or great as I was raised to believe it was. And I feel we are slowly but surely turning into a failed state. Perhaps it's karma for all those other countries we turned into failed states out of our governments own self-serving interests? Iraq, Cuba, Chile, El Salvador, Vietnam, Guatemala, Nicaragua. I could go on and on about the countries we have ruined over the last century...

politics are confusing.
i just know that in Pak the current prime minister gave speech about all that they do..
also obviously helped with fighting insurgents of terrorists from border with Afgh
and i was surprised they do so much that i didnt know about..

they even gave money for a sesame street program so uneducated little kids in that country could have access to an almost equivalent education as had been proven in america .. much more..

and you can read the same of other countries..even groups (not linked to government) created by american citizens..
eg my college in Saudi, american group from harvard basically donated and helped to put together our library which was impressive and very broad- like it had stuff relevant to the culture there - by authors from the region and historical writings etc-
even things like Lebanon blast... an american jewish organization raised thousands and thousands in a few days for relief efforts.
etc.
maybe 'jekyll and hyde' is a good comparison but goes for most countries, i bet

Indeed, the USA is basically like a mix of good and bad. Can be really generous to other countries but at the same time we are moral hypocrites who think everybody in the world is supposed to conform to our own standards.

I've learned to accept that my country isn't perfect, but all the craziness that's going on in my country now really scares me. I know nobody listens to me and thinks I'm just crazy but I really am scared we are going to have some kind of breakdown that
leads to another civil war or at the very least martial law and more violent riots. :(

Which is what we have today anyway.

Society generally stresses other skills as more culturally acceptable like becoming an athlete. This is why we have a bunch of 'blokes' that don't understand really pressing issues like climate change. I would add that not all higher education programs are perfect either.

cubedemon6073 wrote:
a. What is critical thinking and critical thinking skills?

Its a tool. It's not memorizing a bunch of established science 'truths'. Its a developing an understanding of how science 'truths' are reached. Understanding the big picture as a whole as well as understanding the little 'parts' that make up the big picture. And understanding the context that created said 'truths' and other information. I say 'truths' because truth is unknowable, everything is a best estimate using available technology.

cubedemon6073 wrote:
b. And, do we learn "critical thinking skills" from some theoretical text book or out in the field?

Both. They compliment one another.

cubedemon6073 wrote:
c. And, even with critical thinking which I do think is extremely important people would still have to want to use it. My experience is people don't vote with logic or reason but with their values and emotions. I've debated with conservatives using logic, facts and figures to show why some of their thinking and "facts" are flawed. They're as emotional as the liberals they claim as emotional when it concerns their way of life and beliefs. Liberals are the same way. Supposedly the schools are teaching "critical thinking skills."

You're right, the schools for the most part are not teaching "critical thinking skills" except at the highest levels.

cubedemon6073 wrote:
d. I never said these things aren't important but how important are they compared to tangible, life and practical skills? Personally, I think the tangible, life and practical skills like learning how to do a resume, job interview, etc are more important then some obscure quadratic formula.

I agreed with you that they're both important. Otherwise the people in power are not the same people that can also think critically.

Feyokien wrote:
Practical skills that you listed are also important.

cubedemon6073 wrote:
e. Supposedly, the millennials and gen z'ers are the most educated bunch of all yet they seem to have all kinds of issues navigating the workplace and real world practical type skills? Why is that? Maybe the focus was to much on some of these academic and critical thinking skills at the expense of these more tangible, practical skills that are desperately needed. They are called narcissists, etc, etc. Why is that? Could it be they were not taught what they needed to know? And, maybe that's because they were learning a whole bunch of abstract academics (which are good) at the expense of the real world, tangible skills needed to function well in the work place?

This is a myth. I don't subscribe to generational models. Only partially true for new consumer technologies.

And, they do so anyway. They lock themselves in their own echo chambers. The desire to think has to be there. A lot of people in my impression don't think and don't want to think.

I think we were all raised to think America was the greatest country in the world. Even I had that misconception and I was in 5th grade when I realized other countries looked just like ours. Sure there are still countries out there that look nothing like ours because they are decades behind.

I also realized we still have bad laws in our country and corruption like we did back then too. We still don't have certain laws to protect people.

I have realized nothing in our country has changed but cars and technology. People have always been the same.

And did you know even during the Spanish flu, they had anti maskers back then also and also thought they were being oppressed and having their freedom being taken away.

So IMO, America is not the greatest country in the world as we make it out to be.

I didn't realize that about the Spanish Flu. You know what scares me so much about all this? I feel like history is repeating itself. First a deadly pandemic, then another great depression, what if World War 3 is next? :(
