It usually takes many, many years to develop a vaccine. We just have to be patient.

I believe this crises will keep the orange dictator in charge of the US. Eventually other countries will be fed up with him & World War 3 will start & the nukes will literally fly & destroy our 1ce great planet. I'm seriouslly hoping this virus kills off the human race before it's too late for earth.

So everybody's got to go on living with these social restrictions for years? I'm sorry but that ain't going to happen. People will become complacent and will want to get on with their lives. I'm already frustrated because I can't go and see my mum during her last couple of years on this Earth (due to terminal cancer). I want to spend as much time with her as possible, but I can't because I've got to sit there waiting for the TV to announce, "yay, we've finally got a vaccine".

It's so s**t.

I don't know what the restrictions are like in the UK, but in the US I could go and visit my mother and safely visit her outside at a distance and feel safe while doing it. Are you not allowed to do so in the UK?

We are but it still sucks. I miss just going into people's houses, hugging, gathering, being close, etc. Distancing isn't the same, particularly if you don't hear very well. A degree of deafness runs in my family, and although most of us aren't deaf enough to require hearing aids, it can still be awkward to hear each other speaking outside 6 feet away. Also it won't be summer forever; come autumn and winter people won't want to be visiting each other outside.
All these "solutions" are great for a few months, but when it stretches into years they're not so great, they're a burden that denies us freedom. I'm sick of it.

And to top it all off, if this vaccine will take years, the children won't be getting a proper, full-time education in school and surely they can't go on like this for years. It is vital for children to socialise, and also to come into contact with germs and viruses to build up an immunity for when they're older.

For a virus that 80% of people don't get ill from.

That's a wrong assumption. Most get ill but it's not more of a problem to them then just a atypical light cold.

The Spanish flu that came right at the end of the First World War did eventually burn itself out -so to speak.

There were three waves. A bad wave, then it subsided in summer, then a WORSE wave in the winter, and then a third wave that was actually somewhat mild. And then it kinda just went away. And then society got back to normal, and the economy boomed -and the "roaring Twenties" began. And then came the Depression. And then early in WWII the US actually invented a vaccine for the Spanish Flu (even though it had subsided almost twenty years earlier.) They were afraid the great movements of troops in the new war would spread the disease all over again. They gave vaccine only to servicemen going overseas. Then after the war the innoculated everyone. But the vaccine was long after the Spanish Flu had already subsided in 1920.

Less deadly than the Bubonic Plague, but more deadly than the regular flu, the Spanish Flu was comparable to Covid in death rate apparently. But it was a flu virus and not a covid. People who get it may not stay immune. So we just dont know. We may get herd immunity, or not. We may get a vaccine, or it may be like AIDs and we never get a vaccine.

Yay! Roaring Twenties!
