I never kill bugs. I am just not a big fan of them getting on me, and I have no love for the German cockroach. I always respect the autonomy of spiders. I talk to and sometimes name the giant wood roaches. The eerie thing is sometimes, I think they understand me.

I went to school in Coral Gables, FL and remember the first time I saw one of them suckers staring at me from the foot of my bed in my dorm room. It was like some creature out of a movie.

Nothing in the world creeps me out more than something tiny that has the potential to cause me pain. Anything that is a stinging or biting bug will die at the soonest opportunity if it comes anywhere near me and I have the means to squish it. Bees and wasps, I just run, mostly because I am too afraid I'd miss and just make it mad. Oh but they do love me. There can be sixty people on a beach and the one bee will find and harass me until I finally give up and leave. No kidding either. But the worst was getting pinched between my toes by an earwig (those pincher beetle things that like wet wood). I won't walk barefoot anywhere now unless the carpet or flooring is light enough to see if one is there.

I'm afraid of them, I once when I was young discovered a Praying Mantis on my shoulder and I was so scared I was swatting at it constantly and running around, even after I'd gotten it off I felt afraid. These days my bedroom is an insect Graveyard, though I didn't really have any to do with it as far as I know.

Insects can be so beautiful aesthetically, like beetles or praying mantises. But I can't stand mosquitoes or flies.

I love watching them and interacting with them. When a "bug" gets in my home, I calmly catch it with a giant cup and take it outside to let it be free.

Wow, I was gonna say that first sentence but I thought I'd sound too awful. I agree with all you've said.

It makes me very sad when people kill things, bugs, squirrels, etc. I don't think we can say we have respect for life if we're willing to take lives easily, even the lives of insects! If I accidentally kill a bug or a bird (I hit one with my car on the interstate once) I feel terrible about it. I get a sick feeling in my stomach. Every time I see a dead critter on the side of a road, I feel like a little piece of my soul has been lost.

I often remove insects from the sidewalks on campus where I work so people won't step on them on purpose. And I also catch insects that enter buildings and release them outside.

Really? Because I think being against taking lives is the most disrespectful thing possible, it's completely ignoring the way nature works, one thing eats another and in turn is eaten. Things die, that's the way it goes. It's like Vegetarians who say that eating meat is immoral.

I completely agree, except that it is different to kill just for the sake of killing. If I needed to eat bugs to survive, it would different. But I am not going to kill something unless I have to for my own survival or that of my children. My wife is on her own.

I have somewhat of a "texture issue", which makes me puke at the sound/sight of squashed insects -- hence it's in my own interest to avoid hurting the bugs.

That aside, my regards for insects take a dip south when...
* several bugs whizz around in front of my screen, reenacting what looks like Battle of Britain in a 1:2000 scale miniature...
* two flies keeps landing on and crittering about my face, awakening me at #¤"!-o-clock a summer morning...
* A mosquito bite on my ancle itches to the point where I scratch it into an open wound...

Insects are interesting and amazing in many ways, and an important part of life on this planet through 400 million years or so -- but not inside my 200 square feet apartment, thank you...!

I loved bugs as a kid, and most of them still hold my interest ( spiders are cool and i like millipedes) but these roaches scare me--- they fly and they actually fly AT you like a warplane! YIPES!! ! Florida has some nasties we never had up north, like fire ants ( OUCH!) and black widows and noceeums(sp?). Up north we used to catch praying mantids that were bright green. We have mantids down here, but they're a different species and are sorta camoflage in coloration... greyish. still cool, though. Those damn roaches, though--- YIPES!! !

Yeah, I'm from up North, too. They warned me about the bugs, but couldn't believe my eyes the first time one of them tried to dive bomb at me! I still scream when one runs across the floor, and then I heave a thick book at it. I hate cleaning the gore... :x

I think I really dislike most bugs and flying things because they do unexpected things, and with a heightened startle reflex, I hate that. It's nothing to do with irrelevance for life, or anything like that.

I don't loathe them, but bugs scare me. Well, certain types of bugs. I'm peculiar in my definition of bugs; there are some that just don't count.

I'm all right with worms.

Over all, the only creatures that Im afraid of are the ones that have venom, or carnivious towards humans (or in other words if it can kill you). However it would be hilarious I think to introduce the camel spider to America.

Yes, I understand that death is a part of Nature. Death of a squirrel by a car is not natural.

So, um, if taking lives is so natural and respectful, then you'll agree with me that as long as we can kill bugs/critters/vermin when their population becomes too large, then we can do the same with humans? I'm not kidding.

We already do that though. So to speak.

I get that issue too...
Other than that, I am actually fond of most bugs apart from ants and wasps. I used to keep praying mantises and stick insects...found them fascinating. Beetles can be so beautiful and I have a real thing for moths and spiders.
