I never had to call 911 until the year 2006. That year was so full of hell, I had to call it .... probably about 10 times. Most of them were for reporting the same lovely excuse for a human being for various violent crimes. :) One call was for an accidental electric shock.

I hope I'll never have to call again.

Never. I've been lucky - although there was one time when my idiot father nearly burned the house down when he tried making french fries with a regular pot on a stove and lots of cooking oil...

I have to dial 9 to get out of my res hall's phone system, then 1, then the area code and number, but the 1 stuck. Same thing's happened to my friend a few times when he's tried to dial a 919 number.

A few years ago my Dad had trouble breathing and then fell down the stairs. I called 911 and right after they came he started throwing up. Turned out he was just drunk and had been choking on his vomit. :(

I have huge trust issues with cops. That said, I had to call 911 recently. It was EXTREMELY difficult for me to do... and not really an emergency, but here's what happened...

I was sitting out on my back deck one afternoon, when suddenly there was a guy over at the fence that borders the front yard to the backyard and deck. He started firing questions at me, like what my name was, do I live here, etc. I'm like, uhh... what? who the hell are YOU?! He told me he was an investigator and showed me his gun, but no badge. Turns out he was looking for a past tenant that was in some trouble with the law. I knew this already because we had gotten mail for her from the county courts, so I looked up her info online at the county courts site, and she had a huge record. Anyway, I assured him that I wasn't her, and that nobody else was in the house (except for my toddler, who was napping... making this whole situation that much more scary), and he seemed satisfied and left. It took me awhile to get up the nerve to call 911 about it, which I only did after a number of people told me that he couldn't have been an investigator from the county because he never showed me a badge. The gun thing and the fact that he had been so demanding while coming on MY property made it that much more scary. So I finally called them, and they told me that a bail bondsman had called them to warn them that he was coming here. So at least I knew at that point he was somewhat legit. Still, he could have handled that much better. Scared the crap out of me, for sure.

My partner also called 911 twice right before that. The more recent time was because he found a transient on the property, going through our landlord's trailer. My partner went up to him, and the guy told him that he was supposed to be there, "fixing it up", or something like that. My partner called our landlord and said that absolutely nobody should be going through his trailer. So my partner went to take the guy's picture with his camera phone, and the guy immediately bolted off into the woods behind our house. So he called 911 and a sheriff came out. Of course, nothing ever came of that. The other time he called 911 was because we smelled a VERY strong burning-plastic smell, but couldn't tell where it was coming from. Some firemen came out, but of course by then the smell was gone. Doh.

This all happened within the first 6 months that we lived in this house. Neither of us had ever called 911 before, and that was three times in that time period. Not a good sign...

One night, my partner ALSO saw about 5 cops marching down our street with a guy in handcuffs in between them. We have no idea what that was about. We live on a very quiet residential road, although we are nearby the freeway and another main road. Still... all very weird...

I don't use the phone myself, but the number has been dialed so many times in my house that they know our address when our number pops up on their screen (they say that happens with frequent callers) My father was sick for a long time - he went into the hospital late at night countless times. The poor firemen would show up in the wee hours of the morning with their boots untied leaning on each other & yawning. My mum has gone in a few times also. Add in a fire, a couple gas leaks & a couple others. Yeah, they know us.

I too pranked 911 as a child. They called back, I told them I didn't call. A year later I broke down to mommy and told her I did. My conscience will always win.

Anyway, last time I called was about 6 months ago. My ex sent me this vague "goodbye" type email. I knew him well enough to know exactly what he was implying. Figured it was mostly scare tactics, but you never know, so I called. A police officer took down my number, told me he'd call back. He called back saying that he called Tom (my ex) and there was no answer, so they were sending someone out to his apartment to see what was going on. I'd be updated shortly. The next phone call, I'm told that they had to break in, and when they did, the house wreaked of gas. They cuffed him and sent him to the psych. ward.

Tom claims he had the gas on for 15 minutes, changed his mind, and went to sleep.

I'm just glad he can't bring up my past with psych. wards (I was freakin' 16 anyway) anymore.

I've been in 3 psych. wards on 5 occasions, and I've yet to meet someone they never let out. I've seen lots and lots of "repeat offenders" though. I'm sure there are more "hardcore" mental hospitals out there with people who are possibly... unfit for normal life in society maybe? It's just not something I'm familiar with really.

I know someone who is too paranoid to go get help because she is afraid she will be put in a hospital and never let out. I have tried to reason with her. Hopefully she can get some help.

I've never needed to dial 999.

Never dialed 9-1-1, but as a youngster (I was perhaps four or five) I found the shiny red handle on the apartment building's main-floor fire alarm pull to be irresistible. The alarm was loud, and rather than run away I kept trying to push the handle back up --- which in fact did cause the alarm to stop ringing, though I could only hold it in place for a few seconds, and so the alarm was going on/off/on/off. The upstairs neighbor came running down the stairwell screaming "Fire! Fire!" (I think she was perhaps German because I recall that the voice carried an accent). And then the firemen arrived and I was terribly upset and confused and I contrived some story about how all the sticks I had been collecting (I had an armful of twigs that I had carried with me, which perhaps also explains why the damn handle was so hard to push on) must have caught on the pull and triggered the alarm --- that I'm certain as an adult absolutely nobody would have believed, but whatever.

Which suddenly makes me wonder... Exactly what was I doing in the apartment lobby by myself at the age of four or five clutching a bundle of sticks without a parent anywhere in the vicinity?

Funny that...
