Excellent idea.

I'm really glad that my parents never smoked.

Am not referring to OPs post, but to overall belief of smokers affects on others.
Why is it always seen as really bad to smoke around children,as if they are any more innocent than animals [who are far more vulnerable by smoke] and adults who choose not to smoke and don't want it near them?

Am not bothered whether people smoke or not, just as long as it's not forced on others [regardless of whether they're human, cat, rat, dog etc].
Smoking is a choice that the person has personally decided to do-so their smoke should be kept personal to,eg. to themselves to or others who aren't bothered, have asked for it and know what it is.

Smoking causes 4.9 million preventable deaths in the world each year. Why aren't we worried about this?

We're worried about terrorists, but they are not so efficient as to kill 4.9 million per year!

Smoking is more addictive than heroine.

I worry about people smoking because my cousin has cystic fibrosis and second-hand smoke is terrible for her lungs. And people who could be lung donors for when she gets to the point of needing new lungs (through no fault of her own) have potentially ruined their lungs for donation. :(

I agree. My grandparents smoked, and because of it my mom has extremely bad asthma.

I happen to agree 100% that it is indeed child abuse to smoke around children. It is also physical assault to smoke around any other person. I can't even be around smokers when they aren't smoking, but just reek of it.

After I left home and quit secondhand smoking, I realized why people used to give us funny looks all the time. We stunk.

Smelena: good point on terrorism - all they need to do is get us all addicted to cigarettes and they can conquer the world  In all seriousness, you're right. It's one of the number one causes of death and disability.

Tiger11: I can identify a smoker within 10 feet of me. It clings to them and the smell, when my senses are already feelin assaulted by life in general, is more than I can bear. Even when my mother would come babysit my kids, it took days to get the cigarette odor out of my home. She did not smoke in my home or even outside while babysitting - it just hung on her that badly. I should mention she has severe OCD and bags/seals all her clothing right after washing it...and it STILL smells that bad. *shudder*

My older daughter is spending most of her time at her boyfriend's house and his mum smokes like a chimney. She reeks of smoke a lot of times she comes here.

I was concerned before but now I'm really worried because she is in the early stages of pregnancy and I don't want her to get cancer or the baby to be damaged.

The lady smokes because she is in a lot of pain from a bad back and it makes her feel better and because of the bad back, she would find it hard to go outside every time she wants to light up (which I think is the most considerate thing to do) so it is a worry.

Plus, she doesn't want her youngest son (the baby's dad) to leave because all her other kids have already left home.

The thing that really makes me angry is seeing people blowing smoke near a baby or a pet or seeing pregnant women puffing away. I also read recently that nicotine is THE most addictive drug in the world. It is very difficult to give up smoking.

It also strikes me as quite ludicrous when young girls who are pretty and nicely dressed up ruin the whole effect by smoking cigarettes that smell like burning rubbish at the local dump. Not all cigarettes smell like that but enough do to make it quite offensive to sit near smokers.

Second hand smoke is very dangerous to a fetus... maybe do some reading and inform your daughter of this.

I think it's really, really disrespectful to smoke around a prego.

When I was pregnant, hormones all crazy and whatnot, I'd go PSYCHO on anyone who smoked around me. Other than that I was pure sunshine though :P

I agree completely. Ideally, smoking should be banned outright.

I think that's a little extreme.

I used to feel like vomiting when I was pregnant and somebody smoked around me. While I was pregnant with my older daughter, smoking was still allowed in the workplace and I was worried it would damage my baby so I used to keep away from the smokers as much as I could.

I now get coughing fits near smokers but they don't usually get the hint.

My daughter is trying to convince her boyfriend not to smoke too. She's tried saying it makes him stink. He usually does it when he is drinking with other people so it is pretty much of a social thing.

Sash is reading lots of things about pregnancy and fetal development and looking at pictures on the internet. Even at 9 weeks (which she is), the babies have identifiably human feet and hands with all the fingers and toes visible but they are incredibly small.

Your political correctness is abhorrent. Parents have the right to smoke. If the kids don't like it they can go to their room, close the door, and do their non-smoking in there. The idea of outlawing cigarettes is stupid... it didn't work with alcohol, and it isn't working with other drugs, either. People would still smoke; only now, governments not only wouldn't get that tax revenue, but they'd also have to spend billions of dollars in a foolish attempt to enforce such a stupid law. Tens of millions of people would become criminals. Get a grip... smoking is legal, and obviously should remain so.

BTW, I don't smoke (tobacco), quit 11 years ago./
