If you are coming to Oz, then I suggest you travel around before you decide to migrate for good; get an idea of the best place to settle. Victoria has a nice cool climate, but can have fairly hot summers (summer here is from Dec to Feb), while Queensland has a more tropical climate. New South Wales, which is where Sydney is located, is more of a mixture of temperate and warmer weather, but with the mountains (Snowy mountains and Kosciusco), it can get quite cold near the Great Divide. Tasmania is quite cold during the winter, and has some beautiful scenery. Western Australia is the largest, and driest state but has Perth as its capital, which is a beautiful city on the Swan River. South Australia is fairly dry in places, as with the Northern Territory, but Adelaide and the Barossa Valley are worth a look. All the major cities have their attractions, from the bridge and opera house in Sydney, to the MCG and Crown Casino in Melbourne, to the Australia Zoo near Brisbane and Hobart's nearness to Port Arthur and the views from Mount Wellington. Once you do become a resident, it is advised that once you have citizenship and have enrolled to vote, that you do so every election, for unlike the US, you get fined if you don't. Oh, don't forget too, we don't have the right to bear arms here either. That is for the police and the army and any licensed responsible person.

I was thinking about Brisbane actually, somewhere near there at least since I'd like to visit Lamington National Park as often as I could.

Do the cars drive on the left or the right?

What's the public transportation system like? (I am not able to drive, nor really want to because I'm paranoid about potential disasters and I don't like the inefficiency of moving a 2 ton object in order to carry a 1/9 ton object everywhere.)

Which would be hiring more, chemical technicians or electronic technicians?

Are wild parrots as friendly as domesticated ones?

What is the cost of living?

What is the maximum temperature in Brisbane? (K or F or C, doesn't matter to me. 8) )

What kinds of food are there?

What's job security like where you live?

PS: I vote and I don't own a gun. Thanks for answering TCO! :D

Oh, dear. You mean you can't go into a shopping centre and shoot everyone if you wanted to? That would be a blow.

My sister in law used to live in Perth, but then moved to Queensland for the tropical warmth.

I think that they drive on the left.

I think that the cost of housing is low, outside of the major cities.

One thing, though--since you are going there to look for work, getting four weeks of paid vacation per year is pretty standard. I know that most Americans would find this outrageous.

Left or right? Damn I forget, I think it's left, we have "Keep Left" signs, which are handy when you have a bad memory. What's this about again?

Good I suppose, just try not to use Trains too much, in certain places, like Canberra. Also note that there will never be any good reason to find yourself in Deception Bay (Even if you have nowhere else to live).

... Try "Job Search" for Australia, it should tell you.

Jesus what are we? Bird Keepers? I don't know probably. You could attract wild birds with certain Bird foods.

Tyrannical... in terms of rent and buying a home. Otherwise it's great.

About 40 Celcius, maybe a little over. You get used to it though, I happen to be wearing all black with long pants and it's Summer. It's about 30 C right now.

All.

Great unless you work for a Small Company, in which case it's Draconian Hell. At the moment they can sack you for no reason at all but Rudd has promised to change that, in the mean time "Work Choices" allows you the choice to go with a Big Company or stay with the Dole (More or less).

I live in Burpengary which is somewhere to the north of Brisbane, it's in the Suburbs.

Also, never go Swimming. And stay away from the bush. We happen to have some of the deadliest snakes, spiders, fish, and jellyfish in the world.

I would also like to note that you can get money for having a disability... you know... just saying... :pirat:

8O Did you hear about what just happened in Colorado? 4 people dead and the police don't even have a suspect.

I would enjoy Queensland territory then - I love warm weather (the worse I've been through is 110 Fahrenheit or 43 Celsius in Texas summers.)

Pretty much a shock for us Americans, except for managers (they do whatever they want or just abouts here. Good benefits for bosses here, none for people who work. )

About if I should learn to drive here in America and learn the bad habit of driving on the wrong side.

Thanks for the advice. Should I ask why not to go to those places?

Jobsearch didn't list much, but iSeek had 56 jobs in Brisbane paying $35,000 to $60,000 annually for electronics technician compared to 16 in Brisbane paying $20/hour for chemical/laboratory technician. Can I get some reference as to what to what a good paying job is in Australia?

Buying a home in the major cities? Is it anywhere around 200,000 USD for a 2Bedroom 1Bath house? That's about the cost where I live. Southern Minnesota that is.

Sounds like Texas where I grew up, except I suppose you don't get anywhere near -6 C during your winter?

Even Mexican? Do you have Pancho's Buffet?

I would say my experiences working for McDonald's and Wal-Mart approximate Draconian heck for where I live - working all hours, getting paid barely enough to survive, being fired for making some coworkers "feel uncomfortable" (they are allowed to discuss whatever topics they want, but if someone doesn't share their views they get uncomfortable for some reason. )

We have some fairly deadly creatures here to, but most of them don't like to be around people. Are your deadly creatures a little more outgoing? Jellyfish landlocked? Even in your swimming pools?

I could get SSD (Social Security Disability) if I really pressed the issue, but I think it's not my thing to do.

And may God bless you. The above response was the friendliest I have ever received from you and I thank you for the thought.

PS: I don't believe in "karma" per se, but I believe God is Righteous and He told us to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" because He is just and will repay wrongs and bless what is right in His sight. Thank you for the thought, I appreciate the sentiment.

No worries. I don't mind that you or anyone else is Christian, it's just that some people tend to go overboard with the sermonizing. I guess we may in some cases just have to agree to disagree.
