I didn't mean that in an insulting way.

I mean, video starts, person gets the que to give one or the other 'types' of smiles. They are not actually giving the smiles. Does that make sense?

That is what I did think of too, but it conflicts with my idea of a genuine and a fake smile. In this case, all the smiles in the test are fake.

I got 18, but I was confused as to what they meant by "fake smile" until that last part.

See, that's what I thought too, but then on the results page it was talking about the differences between fake smiles and real smiles, and how they measured them by certain facial movements. I guess they must have done something to prompt the subjects' genuine smiles in order to get them to be unconscious.

16/20

My mom says I'm getting better at reading peoples' expressions.

17 out of 20.

Then again, I've always felt the lack of "reading people" skills was something I don't share with other Aspies for some reason.

EDIT: Scratch that.. not "always" I mean, but in the past few years. I had made it a point to learn about body language through conscious effort rather than taking it for granted through mindless instinct like most NT's. After a while I think I can now read people better than most NT's.

16/20. It's all about the eyes. If they squint, it's probably a real smile.

16 out of 20 correct. The difference is in the cheeks and the eyes. I've read an article about this. It's easier for people with AS to tell the difference when it's on pictures than when it's in real life.

I used to be pretty sure that I'm excellent at reading people but it was much later when I finally realized that I'm not good at reading people's facial gestures if I don't concentrate a bit on it and that a thing like body language REALLY exists (I used to read about the concept that one can communicate his/her feelings using body language in my mother's magazines but to tell the truth I didn't believe in this too much). But it's easy to figure out an average human being - they all follow some psychological rules of behaviour. If you have some knowledge concerning evolutionary psychology you know how a human will behave in a particular situation.

Jaded, what does your avatar presents? I was always wondering who's that girl.

That's what I figured, as well.
But then, I only got 12 out of 20 correct. (Actually, I was going more by whether the corners of the mouth 'dropped' right away, or whether the smile seemed to linger.) I like to think that among people with whom I am familiar, I am better able to discern the difference.

I got 15/20. I think that the only reason that I did so well is because I read an article a long time ago that said something about all the muscles in the face are involved when someone smiles genuinely. The most notable is the muscles around the eyes. If they contract along with the cheeks, then it's a real smile.
