In both America and the UK there used to be a lot of prejudice against Irish people. The Celtic culture is very different from the Anglo-Saxon culture. Also, in the States there was fear caused by the number of people coming from Ireland -- similar to what we see today with people from Mexico ("They're Catholic; they breed like rabbits. They're taking away all our jobs. We're all going to end up speaking Gaelic." Sound familiar?)
