i wake up early every morning at 4 because of routine sleeping patterns and because i have to take a shower early and my hair takes a long time to do so i get up at that time to do stuff before i get picked up for school which starts at 8.

Today I will be awake because I am working at my part time job which is in a hospital - I usually don't take breaks when I work overnight because it makes it harder to regain my regular sleep cycle.
Usually when I work overnight, I have a regular day and then go to bed early (11 pm). I drink caffeine to put me to sleep (ADHD). If that doesn't work then I have a treat (ice cream) and since I am allergic, the benadryl I take to counteract the allergy will do the trick. If not, I have an herbal whammy that knocks me out.
When I am healthy I don't sleep much, so if I went to bed at 11 pm I would wake up at 4 or 5. Lately I have been going to bed at odd hours and waking up five hours later so I've been up at 4 a lot.
Finally, the kitten is still pouncing....

I often stay up until 4 AM or later, as frequently as once a week.

Often homework is the culprit. Other times, however, I'm just so darn WIRED! I naturally for some reason get a lot of energy around 10 PM usually. Usually I'll be tired enough to go to bed around 3ish, but once in a while, it'll be 4 and I'll still be wide awake.

Well its paper night! and I'm only about 1 & 1/2 pages in, despite the fact that I'd been trying to get myself working on it all week.

Most likely I'll write another 1 & 1/2 pages in the next two hours, then nap from 6 to 8, and get the last two pages filled within an hour before I have to rush out the door.

I don't know why this method works, but it gets me a B+ grade on my papers pretty consistently...

Fun? It's great to stay up at night and sleep all day :-)

Unfortunately I have to get up every morning at about 7:30, but if I would have the chance my awake/sleep cycle would be very different. Still often going to bed very late, but it's killing me after a couple of days. So I go early now and then, when I really feel like I am about to collapse.

So quiet at night, and no people around to bother me :-)

If that was not a rhetorical question, my answer is as follows;

i opted to work the 2nd shift at work 6pm to 3am because it pays time and a third vs. the first shift which is 8am to 5 pm.

the third shift is 3am to 8am and that pays 1.6 times the first shift, but its only 5 hours of pay, which equals the same pay as 8 hours would pay on the first shift.

In essence by electing to work the 2nd shift i am giving myself a 33% payraise

Or more appropriately, instead of making 33% more money i have to work 33% less time to make the same amount as if i had worked the first shift.

thats my story, i'm sticken to it.

Sleep is boring...I crave constant mental stimulation and there's only so much dreams can do...

This brings up a memory about a fantasy that I had as kid.

I imagined that I could be two 2 people at the same time. Not sure if it only was two bodies or really two different people with different minds. I do rember that I have been thinking about the information exchange that I wanted to happen between the two though. So it probably was two minds too.

But the idea was that I was being one body/person until I/it was tired, and I could switch to another body/person to continue doing and exploring things while the other body/person was resting. So I could go on for over 24 hours a day :D

I read a sci fi short story about twenty years ago in which the main character could not sleep (genetic enhancement or something, I don't remember exactly anymore) -- didn't need to sleep at all. I remember thinking how wonderful that would be. Just think of all the obsessions I could work on if I had those extra 8 hours a day  !

You know when you're sleeping, the world is deconstructed by tiny little red aliens and when you reawake, it is put back together again. That's why I sleep with one eye open to catch them in the act.

Try it out and you'll be as paranoid as I am...

Can't sleep clown'll eat me...

WRONG!

the tiny little aliens are green....
the clown is a demon in disguise. it changes clothes in my attic - i heard it last night. or was that the squirrels in my head - no, my attic, no, my roof. they left footprints on the roof of my car.
the tiny little aliens are squirrels in green clown costumes driving cars with sunroofs at the speed of light so they can deconstruct the world in one night and give the parts to the tiny red aliens in santa suits who in turn give them to good little boys and girls. the bad boys and girls get pieces of coal which are the parts that got left out when the world was put back together and that is why they can't sleep until after 4 am...

my kitten is chasing the squirrels and that is why she is turning white and pouncing on me at 4 am. she wants a red suit.

stream of consciousness is fun.
