^ Surprisingly, the county I live in has the highest diversity of dragon and damsel flies of any county in North America. Who knew?

^^ In NJ? Really? Wow. That's cool. I wish I had my other computer up and running because I have a whole whack of personal pics that I've taken on my travels of various creepy crawlies.

I also like these guys. Three horned Rhino Beetle. My sister has one (mounted in a frame. We found a dead one about 10 years ago and she wanted to keep it)

^Those things are cool as hell, and strong too. Where did you find the dead one? I thought they were an African bug, but that's just an assumption based on watching TV.

^^ In a Wendy's parking lot outside of Conyers, GA. I have no idea how it got there (and it wasn't quite as big as the one in the pic) but there it was!

my favorite insect...caterpillars are pretty awesome.

oh, i know! i love bees. it's so fun to watch them work. also, they're good photography subjects.


grasshoppers are awesome, too. ooh, ooh, and praying mantis! and ants! and silverfish! dung beetles!

all insects are fantastical. let's not forget the arachnids.

My perspective on insects is all in reference to plants:



I like ladybugs because they eat pesky aphids and mites.
I like bees because they are classic pollinators.

I think it's funny how most people complain about what a pain in the butt they are but we forget how useful and vital they are to life.

Even dung beetles and flies.....

I don't mind bugs when there is one-two of them. three gets me suspicious. more than three makes me panic, OMG-it's-an-invasion!-style.

I love the part that three makes you suspicious.

Bugging me topic

There is a chirping cricket in one of the heating vents in my apartment. Strange for this time of year, in the snow belt.

I agree with the dragonflies mating, thats's the coolest thing ever.

I keep bees. I love them.

My dad's an entomologist. So was my grandfather. He made a lot of the Lyman Museum. When I was a kid he'd take me there. You could pull open these big flat drawers, two inches deep and maybe three feet square, and inside, row after row of pinned insects. There was one with just gold shelled beetles like that, every species they could find. Stunning.

And where would we be without busy bees?

There'd be no honey, flowers, wax, and Burt's Bees products that I enjoy using!!
