Here are my favorites list:

"Don't Disturb This Groove" by The System (1987)
"Crazy Train" by Black Sabbath (1980)
"Whip It" by Devo (1980)
"Computer Love" by Zapp/Roger (1985)
"I Need A Beat" by LL Cool J (1984)
"Only You" by KISS (1981)
"Welcome To The Jungle" by Guns 'N' Roses (1987)

The original "Ghostbusters" theme done by Pat Thrall & Glenn Hughes in '84, before they replaced their version with Ray Parker Jr's (The original version can be found on the original teaser trailer for "Ghostbusters"). I'm still trying to find that song somewhere.

"The Message" by Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five (1982)
"Spinnin' " by Bernard Wright (1981)
"Video Fever" by The Bleepers (1983), from the WarGames movie (the arcade scene)
"Din Daa Daa" by George Krantz (1983)
"Basketball" by Kurtis Blow (1984)
"Hide & Seek" by Tracie Spencer (1988)
"Once In A Lifetime" by Talking Heads (1980)
"Toy Soldiers" by Martika (1988)
"The Coldest Rap" by Ice-T (1982)
"Juicy Fruit" by Mtume (1983)
"Take Me Home" by Phil Collins (1984)
"Hard Habit To Break" by Chicago (1984)

....and a lot more I may add another time. I don't know why I always add the years, I guess it's just a force of habit.

Awesome topic!! ! So, many to choose from. Tried to stick with the early 80's...my formidable years. This is a partial list and some bands - like the Cure - I loved pretty much all their songs - so I just picked the most catchy one or the ones with the fondest memories.

(In no particular order!)

Psychedelic Furs - Ghost in You
The Cure - Love Cats
Echo & the Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
REM - Radio Free Europe
The Smiths - How Soon Is Now
Stray Cats - Stray Cat Strut (or Sexy and 17)
Wham - Young Guns
Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
Roxy Music - Avalon
The Clash - Train in Vain
ABC - Look of Love
Culture Club - Do You Really Want to Hurt Me
Cyndi Lauper - Girl's Just Wanna Have Fun
The Cars - Drive
Human League - Don't You Want Me (Although - I'm starting to hate it because of that Swiffer commercial!)
Billy Idol - Eyes Without a Face
Prince - Little Red Corvette
Madonna - Borderline
B52's - Rock Lobster
U2 - New Years Day

It's hard to limit it to just the 80s, most of the bands I like were around in the 70s, but got big in the 80s.

Genesis-THANK YOU!
Rush
B52s
Jam

and there were a lot of '1-hit wonders' like Blanc Mange, etc.

Duran Duran (give me a break, I just liked them..;)
Cult
Cure
Smiths

I like a lot more bands in the 90s, tho...

And Crazy train was an Ozzy solo song

I have to mention Phil Collins
and Huey Lewis and the News

If it's not that glam bullsh**...

Hard rock and metal (NOT Poison, Ratt and Whitesnake. Def Leppard being tolerable to an extent), were some of the best. The Crüe are quite hair metal, but they are a HUGE exception for me. Not as much glam.

Now, it's hard to name bands that I like from the era as while most of my favorites had they their heyday in the 80's, they may have either started out in the 70's or continued into the 90's onward (or both). So a few of my favorite albums:

Metallica - Kill 'Em All
Guns N' Roses - Appetite For Destruction
AC/DC - For Those About To Rock...
AC/DC - Back In Black
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
Rush - Moving Pictures
Rush - Permanent Waves
Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble- Texas Floods
The Jeff Healey Band - See The Light
ZZ Top - Eliminator

The 80's are also my favorite decade for country music.

Whitesnake were actually really good until Coverdale got rid of Moody, Marsden, and Murray, bleached his hair, and drenched it in hairspray =(

The 70s albums were especially good (if you're into his Deep Purple stuff, at least, most of the band slip in and out of his Whitesnake stuff), but somewhere around 1982 it started to slow down. "Slide it In" didn't impress me much (though it does feature the late Cozy Powell, may he rest in peace), and by "1987"...well...I think we've all heard that album's version of Here I Go Again :x

Paul Simon -- one of the best singer/songwriters in the business.

LOL. I have mixed feelings about the 80s. Sometimes its pure cult and sometimes I get so annoyed that I never manage to get rid of the period I grew up in.

Im surprised that I recognise so little of whats mentioned here already. I guess nobody was a "synthesizer freak"...
Im the only one of this forum who listened to this during the 80's? -->see below.
Maybe its just an european thing. Many of you here are americans... I was just a kid and didnt pay attention to what country the music in question came from...

And this I found out NOW its probably an european thing. At least the text in the intro looks german to me...
My gosh look at the audience! The hairdoos and clothes, sooooo 80's!

LOOL! This is so amazingly weird. I danced too it on a kids disco, haha!

And somehow I like the clear tempo in these kind of songs:

I do think it's weird that we are already so nostalgic about the 80's. I guess its like when I was a kid and the 50's (American Graffiti and Happy Days) became all the rage. My mom used to moan and groan about it.

Anyway, I refuse to ever get "stuck" in one decade. The 80's were awesome but the 90's were even better for music. The 00's are pretty good, too - although it remains to be seen how these times will be defined.

But I don't want to end up like this guy - living in the past:

I've been nostalgic for the 80s since somewhere in the mid 90s =(

But sometimes it's nice to have newer technology...I definitely don't miss cassette tapes, vinyl records, or VHS...and I would never go back to the original "toaster" style NES (I've got the early 90s model 2).

Er...I was about to ramble on and on, but I think I'll contain myself for the moment @_@

OMGWTFBBQ!! !

I  80's music! A great number of my favorite songs are from the 80s.

Duran Duran, Guns n' Roses, The Cure, A-Ha, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Withesnake, The Scorpions, Metallica, . . . these are a few of my favorite artists/bands.

I won't write a list of the songs I love, because I would be too long. But I will show you something different: 80's J-Pop.

I generally dislike the 80s and it has to be about the worst decade mainstream music-wise. That said...

SAXON - one of my favourite bands..
Diamond Head
Iron Maiden
Def Leppard (earlier stuff, though later stuff good too)
