They have a list of religious views to choose from. On the list is Amish. Think about that for a second. How many Amish people do you think use facebook? :chin:

Facebook is the virtualization of the social network. Instead of having to see physically all your "friends" (contacts actually), you can just mantain the relationship by sending a comment. It shows how popular you are, in other words, it shows the power you have in your social circles.

Right, so why would the Amish, who have a closely knit social network in place already, need Facebook?

First, I don't know if the amish have facebook, probably do.

If they do is because, just like any oher young people inside conservative traditions they try to get out, meet more people, enter a bigger social circle, and I guess facebook is a great tool for amish people who live that kind of life. But that's with young people and their young instinct of being there, meeting people, seeing older amish people with facebok is unlikely.

I don't think they even have TV in those Amish communities. And, as another poster mentioned, once they leave those Amish communities... well, you can't really call them Amish anymore, can you?

Meeting new people over the internet is not exactly leaving that community, it can be their small little secret, just like christian kids meet with girls, share a smoke when they're young.

Well, Amish, Catholic, Mormon, Presbytarian and whatever are all segments of Christianity. You might not fit within the specific Amish segment, but you might fit within the much broader definition of "Christian". So, sharing a smoke you can do and still be a Christian, but you're not Amish, and it's the same thing with using Facebook.

I understand what you're saying. But I think it may be a little naive that every adult amish during his younger days kept a 100% amish way of life, I'm sure most of them at their youth made things amish people shouldn't do (in secret of course), then grew up, married and became the typical amish stereotype. What I'm saying is that facebook could be one of those guily pleasures, they still would be amish unless they were kicked out from the community or something.
