I chose a male avatar too :D ( the one that looks very androgynous, maybe japanese/anime "young male" ). All the female ones looked so silly/uncool/female!

.

I always wanted to be male, even if I did have to wear my reproductive organs on the outside, LOL. And yeah, the females looked lame. But another reason that I chose a male, was because in the newcomers advice area, they said that newcomer female avatars receive a lot of unwanted attention right when they are trying to get oriented.

The reasons I stopped were that so much of it was so empty, and that the landscape wasn't continuous, like real countryside, ( except for the very oldest section, which is tiny compared to the space SL takes up now, and a few isolated areas/theme park like places ), so exploring felt very pointless and unreal.

I don't think that they should have allowed people to build such different things next to each other, and that there should have been more "infrastructure" of roads, rivers, etc to maintain a sense of a "real world". I went on the two railways which still work, over short stretches, and it seems such a shame that the segmentation of territory stops these being built everywhere.

Yeah, that. I just didn't know that it would be such a ghost town!

Well, I agree with ouinon and Mist01. I just wandered around aimlessly, and interacted with the one other person that I saw briefly. And what I meant about confusion with the controls, is that I have dyscalculia and tend to get things reversed, so that they then become confusing. OTH, I wish I could look like my avatar-tall dark, male, and handsome!

Oh I see. Ive never heard of dyscalculia. I looked it up, pretty interesting.

But concerning the ghost town you mentioned, there are a lot of islands that are decently populated. Korea 2 and 3 (which I think are like beginner areas, because they were in my landmarks when I first started), Noob Island (which now is completely different and apparently is just one room with 2 teleports to stores), and Dance Island, which plays Trance and Hardcore music as well as has a ton of shops. I go to those most often.

If you want to see some "pretty" places inworld to explore try:

The Lost Gardens of Apollo
Botanical @ Straylight
Any of the Rezzable sims (Greenies Home, Carnival of Doom, Tunnel of Light)
Inspire Space Park

They may convince you that SL may actually be pleasing to the eye. Just search any of those under places.
