Indeed......men are pretty much the only people capable of date-raping women, but our brown brothers are not the only villains in town by a long chalk. But IMHO both propaganda attempts really suck anyway. Anybody with the - er - autonomy to grab women or stuff just like that isn't likely to be swayed by a poster. I think the only reason the gov putrs them up is to make people think they care. Policing crime and bringing the culprits to justice requires too much tax-and-spend for their idea of a good society.

Good point, but I would question our need for rites to manhood at all. In spite of what superstition tells us, I don't believe we need to earn our manhood at all. It happens anyway.

Yes you become a man anyway but I think we need it for cultural binding, social cohesion, afirmation as a person and personal development.

Interesting........I just kind of got on with it. Would I have personality defects as a result of not partaking?

I think those are less looked at since they formally accept you and thus trust you more.

Although set in an extreme... male and female role patterns would be bound to be set tightly, thus doing stuff that a male normally does while being a female could end up painfully for the practitioner because of social control (people correcting each other).

Well I'm a lady, but sometimes I have to indulge my masculinity. I just dress like my male idols. That's me being manly. :D :) :?

True, but then there are always shortcuts.

I have to question your use of the adjective/adverb 'our'.
In fact, is this entire thread concerned with the socio-dynamics of male (and I mean Neurotypical male), (for which there is a strong case)
Or are we talking about atypical Asperger males, who, with an innate sense of integrity, justice and honesty ,have no case to answer?

For my part, all my social morals came from books

By "we" I meant humans in general. Though I suppose if the individual has absorbed the cultural value very strongly, then I guess it could be called a need.

I don't really know what this entire thread is about.....random topics by men, for men, I suppose.

What do you mean by shortcuts?

I am not particularly concerned with my masculinity.
I like me a bit of a 5 o'clock shadow to add some manliness, but other than that I don't really care.

I knit, I crochet, my room is littered with colourful little origami pieces that some might consider 'girly'. My current set of bed sheets even have flowers on them. I don't care really. I am a functional kind of guy and if the bed sheets perform their role as bed sheets, I am not concerned with what is printed on them.

My manliness with weapons would be that I can throw a knife and an axe, I can use a lasso or lariat, I can shoot through a dime at 100 feet, but I don't own a gun. Fortunately, few know about this because I've rarely have to display it.

My manliness most people see is opening doors for others, waiting patiently, saying thank you and may I, and breaking up a tense situations with a joke or bad pun.

Certainly the latter manliness gets me better service at a restaurant...
