Take a deep breath Bethie :). I don't know how "the majority" of people eat where you live, but where I'm from it's very common to have a lightly cooked/grilled piece of meat or fish with salad or veggies. No bread, cheese or sauce.

Edit: not to mention carpaccio or steak tartare - raw meat

And Erisad, not eating meat won't make you loose weight.

Is it tasty? It would seem to me most humans are repelled by the taste of meat, hence the constant need to cook it slathered in spices, breading it, disguising it between two buns with some cheese, drowning it in BBQ or steak sauce, grilling it with marinade, etc.

Yes. All of that is simply delicious. I would be a miserable vegan/vegetarian as I would be denied all the foods I love. Sure, I would be skinny and attractive in the matter of months but I wouldn't be happy. D:

The implication being that you wouldn't discover new foods to love?

As an obese vegan of five years, I can assure you, not eating animal products doesn't guarantee thinness.

Probably not. I'm not a fan of vegetables as they have horrible taste and texture. I do like broccoli when prepared properly though and raw spinach leaves in salad.

So if I'll be fat anyway, I may as well enjoy the food I'm eating.

Then there's no point for me to become vegan. I either eat food because it'll make me thin or because I like the taste. If I don't have either of those things, I'd be a saaaaad panda. :P

Oh, I'm cool. Having a less than prevalent view doesn't denote fuming rage.

I'd disagree that not eating meat can't be helpful in weight loss...but that's keeping all other factors equal, and presuming the nutrients involved are obtained from a lower-calorie plant-based source.

Insofar as we can agree that some people are "meant" to be fat, or larger than others,
I believe this would hold true regardless. Also. Oreos. Potato chips. Pizza. Burritos. Pasta. All vegan or easily-veganized. If someone is hellbent on replacing their old lifestyle with processed "faux" products, as far as weight goes, I'm not sure there would be much benefit.

Oh, that's "common" here, too. But for every health-conscious or overweight dieter, many of whom feel sensorily-deprived with such a meal, there are a dozen people eating hot wings, chicken fingers dipped in honey mustard, and steak smothered in A1.

I've yet to find an omnivore who scoffs at the notion of vegan food who truly does not enjoy a single food outside meat, eggs, and dairy,
or at the very least, eat them begrudgingly already because they know they must. I can't imagine someone who subsisted on a diet of NO plant-based foods would live very long. 8O

"The majority of people don't like to eat this and that" part confused me a bit.

Out of curiosity, strictly from an ethical POV how do you feel about seafood?

Couldn't agree more.

Why am I not vegan? Simple. Because A) I don't belong to any groups or group thinking B) I'm not interested in telling other people how to live their lives, or being told how to live mine, C) I'm a big fan of having a well balanced diet and a well balanced life and D) I've never met a truly happy vegan in my life. Some people are very good at pretending they are happy, but I'm better at seeing through the mask than they are at wearing it. If I happen to not eat meat or eggs for the next year, I wouldn't consider myself vegan, I would consider myself to be forgetful, or maybe I will have changed in that case, but I certainly wouldn't give up eating certain foods because of some popular guilt tripping ideology. I like to keep all my options open, and that makes me a truly happy person, and that's what makes vegans so sad and angry and afraid. I would rather smile and be a "hypocrite" than to take pleasure in my own misery.

I do eat some veggies but not because I like them really. Why must the healthy foods taste terrible? >.<

I wasn't making an observation of "likes", per se, but of habits- a plain, absolutely unflavored piece of meat isn't representative of most dishes in the West.

Sallamandrina wrote:

About the same as any other type of animal, with the possible exception being of invertebrates, although it depends on whether we're discussing meta-ethics, as that would still involve abstention on my part from support of environmentally and bio-diversity destructive industries and practices.

Because someone is an awful cook? Sorry - there is a lot of "healthy" or vegan/vegetarian food that can taste absolutely fantastic if it's cooked properly.

I'm not that bad of a cook and neither is my mother. Just some things just will never seem appealing to me, like asparagus and brussel sprouts. *shudder*

My apologies, Erisad, I didn't want to insinuate that you or your mother are awful cooks. I see those things in the supermarket labelled as "healthy food" and they do have a horrible taste. You don't have to eat Brussels sprouts, there are plenty other options :)

Sadly, healthy food is expensive. Post college life is poor. >.<

You can come to like bitter flavours as you age apparently. Give asparagus another go in a few years. I love that s**t

Pickled asparagus is interesting.
