The abbreviaton "lbs" for Avoirdupois pound comes from the latin word and weight unit "libra". An Avoirdupois pound is about 454 grams while a "real" libra was about 333 grams. An old Swedish pound was almost exactly 425 grams. In France and Germany they still sell coffee and butter in "pounds" of 500 grams (½ kilogram).
