It was the worst thunderstorm Emily could remember, partly because she was away from home, where her nanny and mother could protect her. At least she still had Madeline: her doll to hold while she slept in a strange bed.

At my university, there are a number of socially awkward people who shut themselves away and obsess over one topic, and who have a tendency to either mumble awkwardly at you or give long, rambling enthusiastic lectures on their pet subject. We have a special term for those people: they are called senior professors.
