Why do people eat rice?
It has no taste and a terrible texture.
Sometimes it's gluggy and gluey.
Other times it's dry and grainy.
How is any of that appealing?
I love rice so maybe I can help.

To me rice does indeed have a taste, especially fragrant jasmine rice. It
tastes fragrant. It's slightly sweet, with a broad almost savoury flavour at the same time. I can also taste the earthiness in rice - this is especially true of brown rice, which I actually don't prefer much because the taste is too strong, unless accompanied by strong earthy tastes like fruit chutney.
White rice tastes clean and delicate to me. I like the texture, because rice is very individual when boiled. I can't stand mashy textures, where everything is just a sloppy paste (think porridge), so rice is very defined in form.
I don't know about gluggy and gluey - perhaps it was overcooked, or cooked without enough water? Or not washed first, to remove some of the starches? As dumb as it sounds, rice can indeed be cooked improperly, and yes, when that happens, it's unappealing. But same could be said for many foods when badly cooked. Same can be said for dry and grainy. Rice should be properly cooked to be fluffy but moist, firm but not hard, soft but not pasty. This doesn't apply to fried rice, but that's another dish altogether.
I also favour asian sicky rice. This texture is more wet, but it is when cooked correctly supposed to be
sticky, not slimy or gluggy. If it is, it's been cooked improperly. I find sticky rice to be soft and warm and sweet, especially if cooked in a traditional bamboo steamer, or less ideally perhaps, in a rice cooker. I also add the traditional asian ingredients of rice vinegar, sugar (palm or cane is best, but white will do) sake and mirin to lightly flavour it and encourage the stickiness. It's incredibly versatile, and can be used in savoury dishes with vegetables and tofu, or in sweet dishes with fruit and coconut.
Sorry. Special interest-ness.
As for me, I am possibly getting a pet this afternoon ! !! I am about to email the breeder back to organize a time to meet up and talk (ick, but in this case justified) about animal needs and so on. By this evening I could have a pet in my life. I haven't had a pet in six years.
