For the sake of completeness, I should add that the Australian Liberal Party forms a coalition with the National Party at the federal and state level for electoral purposes. The Nationals' traditional stronghold is amongst rural and farming communities, whereas the Liberals' support base is more urban.

That picture I posted was part of an ad campaign, "Celebrate what's great", to raise awareness of Australia Day activities. As other posters have said, the choice of 26th January as Australia's national holiday does not resonate with Australians the way that Independence Day does for Americans, Bastille Day for the French, or Canada Day (used to be Dominion Day) for Canadians. There is far greater public sentiment surrounding Anzac Day, on the 25th April, which is a commemoration of the Australia/New Zealand joint military action at Gallipoli, Turkey, during WWI.

Many Australians are still quite far from wholehearted acceptance of the country's penal-colony origins and convict heritage. There is still some metropolis-versus-hinterland tension between the United Kingdom and Australia, but this is weakening as time goes on. The focus is now shifting to the supposed cultural domination of the USA in Australian life.

In case nobody's mentioned it, do remember that OZ is still the land of sheep and that includes the people so in the matter of debating the pros and cons of emigration, one has to ponder the wisdom of a spectrumite opting to inhabit a continent teeming with conformists (and flies).

Partially it is because I own 4 Australian birds and notice that they have a type of language amongst themselves (including words and phrases like we-ough-wheat, wheat-woo, whurp, zer-we, per-we, certain echo calls for retrieving a separated member, as well as mating calls where the male sings the first part of the Mexican hat dance (sounds like it anyway) and the female chortles. Also sometimes they do a morning song led by the budgies.) I would like to study the cockatiels in their native environment and see if their language is the same or different. If it is different then there language is learned. If it is the same or with minor variation, then it is preprogrammed in their genetic code possibly included in what is sometimes called "junk DNA".

Other reasons I want to go there would include how hostile America is becoming to Christianity, warmer weather, better form of government, better tax laws I'm now hearing, I like the Australian accent, I don't mind flies and there are MANY in Texas where I used to live (now MOSQUITOES here in Minnesota), looks like a better situation on unemployment than here in America, after I get an Associates here (so I would be more able to immigrate) I could advance my education there and I here you guys have a better educational system in terms of the hard sciences (chemistry and physics, which are my interests although I want to work as an Electronics Technician and maybe later as an Electrical Engineer.)

Yer not wrong about the flies! :D The people aren't so bad, though. Especially when you consider that, with less than one-tenth of the population of the USA, it's way more difficult to find a little demographic/cultural niche to conceal yourself in here as it is there.

I find there's enough variety here to suit me. And also more openness and candour than where I was raised, which is always a good thing.

^ assume its the SA equivalent of the VCE, Victorian Certificate of Education. Given on successfully completing yr 12 and generally required (or its equivalent) to get into University/higher education (except for adult or special entry)

I suppose similar to USA High School Diploma ?

u could say that. anyhow one can do a VCE at TAFE course apparently where u complete the requirements of the VCE at TAFE. VCE is not a requirement for everything but more doors are open if u have it. all u have to do is complete the work and u pass. the enter score u get at the end is not as big a deal as it is made out to be.

In the USA you could either get a High School Diploma or a GED or if you parent has a college degree they can just print a certificate. I got the GED and maxed out the scores. 8)
