I actually seem to have what I call "social invisibility," where people see me enough not to run into me or anything, but it's like their brains don't really consciously acknowledge my presence. Seems to work somewhat well online, as well as in person.

It could be possible that you could have your guard up and you appear very intense to other people. I felt that way as well but as I went to this program more and more that helps with socializing my guard has lowered a little and I seem to appear less intense to other people.

I do have a question: is there someone's attention you are trying to grab? I usually don't notice my "socially invisibility" unless I wanted more attention or was trying to grab someone else's attention for a reason.

Sorry, I was off of the site for a few days and didn't see this until now - I promise I wasn't deliberately ignoring you.

I was told at my last optometrist appointment that my eye muscles don't relax when viewing things that are distant, like they're supposed to, so that may cause me to have a more intense gaze, at least. It's probably also pretty apparent that I'm uncomfortable around people and would rather be left alone, since I have pretty bad social anxiety - it probably shows in my body language.

I'm not trying to get the attention of anyone in particular, it's more of a general thing. I feel like my social invisibility is really shoved in my face when even my attempts to join in or be a part of things are mostly/entirely ignored, and that's what's been going on.

It's okay, I would have no reason to think you were ignoring me, I'm not mad or anything.

Is there a place you could go to practice with techniques that can help with trying to include yourself in activities or conversations?

I do attend a social skills group for young adults with autism and other neurological disorders every other week, but it isn't that helpful in that regard - recently, we've mostly just been going over things that most/all of us know by now, like why you should shower on a regular basis. On occasion we'll do things like go to a restaurant as a group (but only, like, twice a year or so), and we usually play some sort of card game at the end of the group. So really, in theory it's supposed to be helpful, but it isn't so much in practice.

Is there anything you could think of that they could do to help you with getting more engaged in the group? Do the other people in the group try talking to you?

There's one person there who chats with me, but she isn't there every time. I really don't know what would help me get more engaged in the group. At this point, I do tend to isolate on purpose, because I'm so accustomed to being alone, I'm not really used to that much social interaction anymore and it makes me uncomfortable and nervous - probably I really need to work on that, more than anything else.
