Well, me and Mary had gone down to the City about the deck situation and we hadn't heard anything yet. So, Mary and her husband went down to City Hall today to check and see if they had followed up - the guy admitted that they hadn't. After Mary's husband gave them some lip, they said they would come out immediately and so they did. A guy came out and Mary's husband showed him around.......he said we have a major problem. He said he was going to have an engineer get in touch with management tomorrow. He said it will probably be over $100,000. I told Mary this guy wasn't even an engineer - once the engineer sees, it will probably cost a lot more. He even said they are going to check the steps in front of each building that are wood - I never even thought about those.
Get this - the guy said that my deck is not the worst and ready to fall down. I bet they were just going to fix my deck to shut me up. The guy did find one deck almost ready to collapse. So me and Mary may not even get new decks out of this, but I did it for safety reasons. I knew we needed an assessment. The City guy said he didn't even think they could get all of the decks that needed to be fixed done within the time limit that they would be given.
I knew we needed an assessment. Me and Mary are afraid once they all know this, someone is going to come after us or our cars. Several people won't be able to afford the assessment amount. So far, if the guy is right (which he probably is), everyone would have to pay $1,000 right away. It's probably going to be more. These people got pissed off when we increased dues $30 a month - I mean they were angry and came down yelling at all the Board members for months. I'm really scared about this even though it was the right and necessary thing to do. It's probably a blessing that me and Mary aren't on the Board because I wouldn't want to deal with this. Lord help us.
The monthly HOA meeting is tonight. Mary and her husband are going. A couple of the new Board members saw Mary's husband going around the property with that guy looking at the decks. Sh!t is really going to hit the fan. Mary said if they ask what was going on, they will tell them.
I'm wondering what will be done for those people who choose not to pay - they can get a lein on their property, but still be able to live here. I'm not paying for other people. Ma said to get a lein on my place then. What?! I kept telling the Board that we had to discuss an assessment so we would know what needs to be done in case we had to have one, but they didn't even want to open the topic. I had even said that we should start an assessment so people could make small payments for a couple years, but they didn't want to hear about it. Now the ball is going to drop and everyone will have to pay a huge amount all at one time. One thing is that I'm not going to let this go - I don't want the City to just come in this one time, we have an assessment and some of the decks get replaced and some just get fixed. They all need to eventually be replaced. I have to keep remembering that there was no other way to go about this. No one would listen to me. This had to be done before something bad happened like in Ohio.
