You don't have to be. I know this 8th grader who was on our team. She was only 4'10'', couldn't run very fast, wasn't very strong, but probably one of the best players on the team.
The backs do most of the running anyway. I'm a forward, more specifically a tighthead prop, though I can play loosehead.

I guess I can clear it up a little more.
I help hold the scrum up. I'm usually position #3 on this diagram, but I also play position #1 fairly often.
