, haven't seen it in my local shops recently. Asda still sell it but it's full of sugar so I avoid it.

Depends what yeast you feed your culture.
But I'm guessing you mean commercially.
As children it was our responsibility to feed a teaspoon of sugar daily to the ginger beer culture. (The other brother had to shine shoes...much less satisfying)
We named it "Gulpalubble" because the sugar would sit on top, then get gulped down.
The thing I don't miss is the detonating beer bottles in the laundry.

I remember Mum making ginger beer. Before she started she had to find out which neighbour was looking after "the plant" - presumably the yeast culture. We weren't trusted with the responsibility of feeding any cultures, as we weren't deemed conscientious enough to keep up such a regular commitment. In fact chores generally weren't handed out, for much the same reasons.
