It's like when for instance you spend half a century having to defend yourself and then all of a sudden people start being genuinely helpful and kind

It makes me feel shy because I'm just not used to it

I didn't realise people weren't being kind to me until they were

I don't know what changed; whether it was something I did or something to do with society but it's like I'm starting again In a way

They liked it, judging by the punters who approached me with compliments. But I thought I didn't sound as good as I can sound. It felt like I was about to fall off a tightrope over the Niagara Falls most of the time. I told them that and they said I hid it well. I haven't felt shy on a stage since the first time I performed in the 1970s. Shyness is a strange chap.
