I bought an artesanal spear at Iguazu Falls, because spears are cool, and all was well until I was packing my luggage and realized they'll never let me take a more than two feet long pointy stick to an airplane. And I didn't have a backpack big enough to carry all of it. I did what any other person in my situation would have done; At check in I opened sooghtly my backpack, sticked the spear in, and handed it over with a straight face. They looked at it weird, but I just stood up there innocently, as if I was saying "yeah it's perfectly normal to have a spear sticking out of my luggage, I do it everyday". And off it went, I thought it'd probably break somewhere in the journey, but it was better than just throwing it away.
As you can see, it arrived! It even had it's own tag, and another one marking it as fragile. I sure had a laugh there.
