I've posted this elsewhere but it is one of my favorites. Between '68-'69. I'm a bit mesmerized by this production.

Oh man, I love Billy Joel, too....my favorite songs of his are River of Dreams, Tell Her About It, And So It Goes, We Didn't Start the Fire (like Toy_Soldier mentioned) and of course, Piano Man. :) I also really liked "Why Should I Worry" (The song he sang for his character in Oliver and Company) when I was a kid. :D

I think he has always tried to really catch something tangible in his music and especially his lyrics. Not just making music, but often telling a story. He reminds me somewhat of Gordon Lightfoot in that respect. I grew up in same area as he did, and not too long after, so it was also very easy to connect with his subjects. Not all the subjects were pleasent to contemplate either, but sank in like a knife deeply, propelled by the honesty. Piano Man and Captain Jack were like that. I also like Summer Highland Falls and Billy the Kid.

P.S. I noticed you have posted some Retro Music & was curious how you came by that preference. Did you have a like a music mentor or find it on your own exploring ?

I like Gordon Lightfoot, too....I liked his "If You Could Read My Mind" song. :D

To answer your question, my preference for retro music developed when I was ages 8 - 13...My stepmom had a bunch of Beatles and Simon and Garfunkel tapes and CDs, and we'd listen to them in the Car and I found that I loved them. Some of the Simon and Garfunkel was a bit deep for a kid (and a little depressing at times) but I loved their stuff, too. :D My biomom and I would also listen to classic rock stations on the radio. I mostly like it puts me in mind of a time when the world wasn't so....insane.

That's something like how I was exposed to it. But in my case it was by my brother & sister who were 5 years older. I was a kid during the 60's and early 70's, but my brother and sister would let me play their records at night when they went out. My brother & I also shared a room and I went to sleep many nights to Simon & Garfunkel. Yeah, some of their songs were on pretty serious themes, like 'The Sun is Burning' and 'The Boxer'. My favorite song by them is Scarbourgh Fair. 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy', with it's many changes, was my favorite Lightfoot song.

But in my neighborhood & school we kids listened to R&B and Funk! This was and still is a great piece by Billy Preston with his band that included the Brothers Johnson on guitars.

Need a light to see my hand and I can't help it if I stumble
Over those things that I've set before me
Wanna see, see my way
Need a friend to help me through when I'm down
Pick my body up and carry me home, take me home

Make a point of watching my life I can see its been so wrong
Climbing mountains without even looking
Want to see, see my way

Two progressive bands that were operating in the backround thru the Disco dominated mid 70's.

Roxy Music - Amazona

BeBop Deluxe - Terminal Street

The street cafe was closed to all but ghosts
Who glide the alleys searching for their lair
I heard a voice like Winter call my name
Said, very soon that I would join them there
And all the creatures born of hate and rage and lies
Crawled from my pen and ran across the page to me
Fascination was the germ of their disease
Degradation is the term of the release

i am trying to listen to this but i am frustrated by the poor sound quality.
i wish i could listen to a crisp clean version of this song.
he wrote it himself and he was 12 in this clip and obviously a prodigy, but the reason i like the song is because it is so rich in intermodulating tempo's and so delicate in it's subtle tonic undertones that give an almost subconscious but real foundation to the main ensemble. very good indeed.

Trying out some "new" bands. I was listening to Reaxion Guerrilla when I saw these guys in the margin videos. Though they do indeed look rather dorky, the music isn't half bad.

Engelmacher "Circumstance"

Like you said, not too bad. And of course mostly meant for dance floor. 'Angel Maker' is a pretty thought provoking name.
